So at POE the officer took the "Do not open" envelope, stamped something in there said to him "You are all set" and we left. So the question is do we get any of the documents back, such as his OFFICIAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE that is in there?

That is why the general recommendation mirrors the official instructions:

"Copies. Unless specifically required that an original document be filed with an application or petition, an ordinary legible photocopy may be submitted."

Refer to page 4 of the Form I-129F petition instructions: http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-129finstr.pdf

Take the originals to the interview(s) for comparison by the immigration official with the legible photocopy, and keep the original record for your personal files.

You can request USCIS to return your original documents: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.5af9bb95919f35e66f614176543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=dccb5d4c6608e010VgnVCM1000000ecd190aRCRD&vgnextchannel=db029c7755cb9010VgnVCM10000045f3d6a1RCRD

Good luck.

I thought that original documents was to be returned at the interview.

when docs are submitted to nvc, they will be kept unless you sent originals with copies also.. if that is the case originals come back at interview

if no copies were provided, bring them to the interview and ask for originals back

I spoke with another member here that POE end of May and she advised me that she asked the officer for BC and MC and got it back

Doubt it! Welllll.... unless she had copies in hand in exchange... then maybe.

You can get it back by filing with the USCIS for a return of original documents. But it will take a while. Would it be faster to order another birth certificate?

OP is on a K-1 visa not a CR-1/IR-1 like you were so no documents were submitted to the NVC. Only to the USCIS and/or the Embassy.

OP is on a K-1 visa not a K-3 (IR-1/CR-1) like you were. The only way to get the originals back is to request them using the above mentioned form. That is why you never give up an original as it is the original and there is no way to get it back--unless it is very specifically asked for, but I usually show them the original and have them make a copy of it. This is very import to understand when you deal with estates and wills and trusts. You MUST always have the original as they will not accept a copy. Always guard an original document with your life.

Good luck,

Dave

Do I need original BC for AOS. We got married today and I want to file asap. They have the original at POE so i do not know where to ask for it back. Where should I send G-884? Does anyone know how long it takes to get those originals back?
