So my fiance and I flew together to the USA from Jamaica on Friday and we were wondering what is the next steps we need to take to make sure the paperwork and everything is taken care of as he needs to be able to get that work authorisation asap. So I was thinking going online to get that I-94 #. Then I know he needs ss# i guess have t wait 10 days before applying. I guess we were thinking into going into town office to apply for marriage licence and get our marriage officialy signed in asap regardless our ceremony cant be till september when family members can attend but we do not want to wait that long to make it official so we will just have a ceremony then but i guess its ok to just get officially married soon. But when, and how soon is too soon. Anyone got a 1,2,3 step by step process?

If he wants to be authorized to work as soon as possible:

- Get married at a city hall or courthouse as soon as possible. There's no "too soon" for it. There's only "too late" with the K-1. You need a marriage license first. Each place as their own requirements. Some, you can get married the same day, some you have to wait a few days after getting the marriage license before having the ceremony. Some request a SSN, but most of them no. Inquire about it at the place where you want to get married. Once married, request certified copies of marriage certificate.

- Get a SSN. Go to your SSA office 10 days after POE.

- apply for AOS/EAD/AP as soon as you have all the required documents ready.

- Once it's sent, the EAD (temporary work authorization) should be approved in 2-3 months. AOS timeline varies greatly. It can take 3 months, as it can take a year. You may or may not be scheduled for an interview.

Yes you can. You do not need the SSN to get married or to file for AOS after you do.

This post pretty much sums it up. But the guides can walk you through it as well. More reading and filing out forms. Oh and MORE cash.

There is no reason to wait at all to go and apply for the SSN. You could do it the same day of POE. Why are suggesting they wait?? Lots of stuff depends on the SSN (bank accounts, insurance, etc, etc), best to have this in hand as soon as you can.

Okay, I stand corrected. This is from the SSN step-by-step guide for K-1:

On the other hand, you should also not file for a SSN too soon either.

You should wait 2 weeks after you arrived in the US before applying for a SSN. If you go too soon your

record of arrival will not be in the SAVE-ASVI system yet, and it will require manual verification from the

USCIS. As this will add weeks to the period it takes to process the SSN, it is advisable to attempt to wait the two weeks to be safe. If you have waited the 2 weeks and they tell you they can not verify you arrival record via the SAVE database, you may allow them to to process it (but remember the potential delay for manual verifications).

Sorry for doubting.

... and that's why I said to wait 10 days.

Although I waited about 10 days after POE and I was personally still not in the SAVE system. The SSA employee did a manual verification but that was not a problem, got my SS card a few weeks later. It's not really possible to know how long it's going to take for a person to show up in the SAVE system, but allowing a 1-2 weeks wait after the POE increases the chance to appear in the SAVE system.

Hi there,

If your fiance has a job offer, you can also call your district congressman to expedite the EAD.

That's what I have learned from the forum.

Good luck!!!

Cin

Thanks, and yes he can get a job offer as soon as 3 weeks from now. We got married today but they made a mistake on the marriage certificate so now we have to go and figure out how to get that fixed up and who knows how long it will take. And I guess i do need to wait for SS# so we can then open a joint bank acct for that proof part for the AOS. Does it ever get easy?
