Hi all,

This is my first post! So glad I've found this forum.

I've been in the US since April 2012 on a 12-month J1 visa from Ireland.

My job is petitioning for me to stay on, and change my visa to a 3-year O1B visa. I'm in the middle of that process, so cannot leave the US until I get a yes or no.

My question is this - is it possible for me to travel domestically in the US, eg NYC - Chicago? Will I be able to board, and have them see my (expired) J1 visa, without getting into a major security / immigration situation?

What should I bring to the airport with me, besides my valid Irish passport and my documentation?

Many thanks,

Eva.

You need a valid government issued iD in order to get through the TSA check point. They are not interested in the validity of your visa and even if they ask they have no authority to detain you. They do have the ability to call over other LEO (law enforcement officer) who can detain you, but only the CBP or a USCIS agent can do anything in regards to immigration. You hand the TSA agent your passport opened to the ID page and as long as the ID information matches your ticket you wil be good to go. My wife and MIL travelled on their passports and they only looked at the bio page.

Have a good trip,

Dave
