Thanks for sharing this info Aya820. The sad thing is that Nigeria sells its electricity to Ghana and its people struggle with not having power or having an hour or two when able.

The way the system is corrupted in those countries, I wouldn't be surprised if the rich won't find a way to swallow those funds and the poor will never see its honorable intentions by our President Obama.

I pray it works and the regular Joe in African sees its fruit.

My thoughts exactly. The upper crust and the leaders will line their pockets once again while the average Joe will manage by candle light.

Ha....when will an intended generous funding ever go to the little man ! Solar manufacturing companies established there and managed by the US would be a start. The West ends up plundering, the corrupt leaders take kick backs and the poor remain poor.

Great vision but difficult to implement.

Meanwhile back at the ranch........ perhaps he could use 1 million to fix the "broke" in the legal immigration system and hire

new employees and implement new technology to eliviate the insane backlogged and short staffed clueless process ? no0pb.gifhuh.png

As long as its managed by USA otherwise they will pilfer the funds as usual.

Many other countries have done similar before. Italians, Brazilians, etc the Chinese are building powerplants their now.

Hopefully it works as the Feds are going to ban the import and sales of personal generators soon.

And hopefully the USA can manage it without a lot of red tape for the average "Joe" to get it as they deserve.

You've hit the nail on the head Gowon. Progress in Africa during these next years of investment should be measured independently by the US.God bless our president's initiative, i can only hope this is the spark needed to usher Africa into a better era.

I do see a lot of improvements in Nigeria over the past few years in Lagos and Oyo state. Both Governors are US educated.

My idea would be that the US set up an actual company here in the US and employ out of work Engineers, etc and have them go on a state level, not a Federal one.

They will hire 75% local workforce (and not just the gofers either - come on now) with the other 25% from USA.

Like when Hoover Dam was built, the first other of business is not the power generation but setting up communities to support the operation and create industry to create, build as many of the products onsite as possible.

If they give the check to the Federal government then 50% of the money will go directly to Swiss accounts or worse to our enemies.

Do any Nigeria on here remember the ITT scheme of years past? After all the destruction of roads, buildings etc to lay cable, we're using satellite phones, I don't know of any house in Nigeria that has a regular home phone.

But I'm sure Obama has this all figured out rolleyes.gif

I will say this - I really hope, and wish that the sub-Saharan African countries could actually receive enough power to have stable electricity. When you see the affects of little or no power on the people it's really upsetting.

That being said - I really appreciated reading everyone's responses thus far to Obama launching Power Africa because there are several good points.

I think the question is - will the people actually get the power?

Will Power Africa generate more jobs and revenue for local people? Will the people who need electricity actually receive it? People in countries that are developing haven't put much faith in any governments and it's easy to see why. Nigeria is a very wealthy country that is filled with corrupt people who have consciously allowed their fellow Nigerians to suffer for their own greed. Nigeria could make their country a better place because they have resources so it is not a far jump to think they can also find a way to use this Power Africa to the advantage of only a few select people without any concern for their fellow man. Americans drilling oil in Nigeria has not resulted in the better welfare of the locals and has led to great suffering for the people there.

I guess we can hope that Obama and his team of experts has found a way to deal with these very well-known mitigating circumstances.

Even if a situation seems hopeless on the outskirts it is wonderful that someone is trying to help or invest in any way in Africa. Hopefully it will alleviate some suffering. Isn't it really only God who can take these matters and straighten them out? That's my belief. But still, I hope that it will work out because each day there are people who need help and someone has to try.

I didn't read the full details but this is only true as long as it's not a loan.

We are still paying for good deed loans from the World Bank from the late 70's and early 80's.

I didn't read anything about it being a loan. The funds seem to be coming from investments and grants from corporations and the private sector.
