Hey everyone, we recently got our k-1 approved and now I'm packing my stuff to bring to my new home. I was just wondering, how did everyone get all their belongings to the US?

2 suitcases for clothes etc and then I sold/gave away almost everything else. I have some things that I will eventually need/want to ship but for now mum stores them.

We did the same thing. Gave everything away and taking two suitcases of clothes. Let go of the past and move forward. You'll feel better when you start fresh. And it's less stressful. God bless

Coming to the USA you are allowed 2 bags per person. Weight limit is 50 lbs each. There is a charge for overweight bags. If you feel you are close or over weight then use LBC to ship. Cheaper that way.

I'm intending on taking two suitcases with me when I fly. But in the last week I have posted a box of belongings via a courier company and I'm pleased to see that it made it. So I will be sending a few more boxes this way. The only thing you need to know when sending personal effects via courier is that you need to attach anything from 3-6 commercial invoices (dependent on the firm you use) and a CBP form 3299. I shipped mine via upack in a moving cube - I only had an apartment worth of stuff, so not much. I did have to fly in first, and once I arrived, fax in my visa/customs forms before the shipping company could cross the border with my things.

I was considering uhaul, but cost of rental, gas, 22 hours on the road so lodging and food was much more than having a company ship it for me and a plane ticket.

David had packed several large shipping boxes but the driver refused to take unless he listed each and every item out by hand on the document. So he bought a giant suitcase and took as much as possible and left the rest at his mum's and we take home a couple of suitcases each trip. I think another visit and it may all be here.

Started off collapsing a three BR household into something manageable. I still miss my chest freezer! Lots of family and friends scored big. Gave the valuable/heirloom items back to my mom with the understanding that she'd store them until I got visa clearance to go down. Personal belongings went with me for a 3 week vacation in the US.

Then took the rest, smushed it all together, and drove it across the border in a Uhaul truck with full manifests. I don't think it was worth the money spent on transport, but my husband was setting up the household in Chicago with the understanding I'd join him after the visa process... one good car accident in the snow led to me doing inland adjustment of status/concurrent petition, so I'm not exactly standard.

I will be doing a Uhaul from NW. Ontario to Kentucky. I got quotes from professional movers, but they were way more than I wanted to spend. Hoping that everything will be ok with a Uhaul truck.

I got a great deal from United Van Lines, they were on their way from Toronto to Florida and agreed to fill the remainder of their truck with my stuff. It was worth the expense to not have to worry about driving all the way to GA

Uhaul does great! Just moved some of my things from storage unit to Detroit this past weekend, and the truck handled like a champ. We got one that only had 1,200 mi on it (and is that new car smell ever addictive if you're pregnant, side note), which probably makes a difference. Their MoverHelp service is also well worth the money if you grab one that has higher ratings. Nothing like having someone else unload the truck!
