I'm not sure why it's out the door, that's actually really sad. Like people not learning math because we have calculators :S

I don't disagree at all - especially on the math piece - but it is what it is.

Your defense of her is political.. If she was a heavy set white woman living in a trailer with a confederate flag in Kentucky saying "Its OK! We all call'm N*as here, its cultural!" Do you really think there would be an article in Salon titled "The Smearing of Tammy-Jo" ???? Would there be articles about how we need to try understand her world?

... Or do you think the same people in these forums who are trying to explain away the issues we saw with this woman would trump out the usual (but for some reason perfectly OK to say) titles of White trash, redneck, etc.. and talking about the lack of teeth, sex with the cousin and connecting her to the KKK, maybe a nice GIF with the General Lee..

Is Cursive Writing Dead?

I don't know how it is in America but I think cursive writing will continue to live on in the Philippines. I had to learn it when I was 7 years old and in most of our writing classes even in college level, our instructors would insist that we use cursive.

When I was growing up (in USA) everyone had to learn and use cursive their entire 5th grade year.

I taught at a Title 1 high school in the USA before moving down here to CR and none, not a single one, of my students could write in cursive. When I asked them to sign their names, they printed them. Though to be fair, a lot of them were also close to being illiterate. But discussing the enormous failures and shortcomings of the US public school system is another topic!

Generally they learn cursive in 3rd grade or around there. I know my children switched schools during the time they had cursive (it was the next year in the first school, but it was the previous year in the next) so they missed learning it. They have a book of cursive writing they use. It isn't really emphasized anymore, as there are other things that schools deem more important, like focusing on the new core standards. Usually, students have to type their papers and learn how to use citations and everything to prepare for college, and cursive only serves to write your signature.

It might be dead in the schools but it's alive as a hobby. Calligraphy might not qualify as cursive but I saw pens and kits at the craft store. I also recall back in the 90's they were saying cooking will be out by the turn of the century. But look at how popular that is. Someone always revives something from the past....eventually.

I loved learning how to write cursive in elementary school! I write slower in print, so I always default to cursive.

Only very tangentially related to politics. Of course we all know Moses wrote in an elegant cursive hand so possibly religious. Nevertheless this should be moved to Off Topic.
