Hi I received my work auth card today in the mail, but just wanted to be clear on something. Now that I have this card, I apply for my social security number, and once I get that number, I'll be able to start looking for work. Is this correct?

Any idea how long it takes to get a social security number in Florida?

Thanks in advance

Correct (you can start to work is the more correct answer. You can look at any time). If the application is accepted successfully you can go back in a couple of days and get a printout of that number. You only need the number for applying for a job. BTW you may want to ask prospective employers if they have the new SSN verification as I will bet yours will come up as unverifiable if they have the old system--just a heads up. The card should arrive in the mail in a couple of weeks.

Congrats on the EAD card,

Dave

Just curious because I thought it was typical to apply for your SSN almost immediately, before you get your authorization to work, not after. Anyone have thoughts on that? Just preparing for our own turn on this...

A K-1 visa hold is "A legal alien allowedd to work" where the SSC is concerned. Typically you have between two weeks after arrival to 2 weeks before the I-94 expires to apply for the SSN. Miss tthat window and you need to wait for the EAD or GC before you can receive the SSN. There are many reasons for missing the window and several of them are due to SSA employee incompetence. Most people try for the SSC before the I-94 expires. Given the things that require the SSN, I would apply ASAP after arrival.

Hi I was actually already in the states on a B2 visitors visa. So the option of getting a social security number wasn't available to me until I got my EAD. Hope your journey is going well!!

Just wondering everyone's opinion on this.... Is it a good sign that I got my EAD before my adjustment of status is approved? We have our interview date scheduled for the 29th of July :-) coming soon!

Getting the EAD before AOS is good because it can take a long time in some cases to get an interview. Good luck!

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Once your adjustment is approved you do not need an EAD. The aim is to send out the EAD's before the interviews, some people get interviews quickly and thus do not get their EAD. It is not a sign good or bad. It is the norm.

Thank you, I understand that completely. I just wondered if it was a good sign that they gave me an EAD at all before AOS approved. Surely if they weren't going to approve my AOS they wouldn't go to the hassle of giving me an EAD a few weeks before our interview, just to deny us. Thoughts??

I know you really want to think it's a good sign that you'll get approved but it's not, as far as I know. I have never met anyone that didn't get an EAD. I have met people who have been denied AOS. To get your EAD you only have to pass a background check, to AOS you need to pass background check(s) and pass your interview. You can have your EAD and then not pass your interview and you can still be denied.
