thank you for the info...you have all been really helpful...I feel abit more at ease now...will keep my fingers crossed and keep everyone updated aswell...thank you...

Timon & Pumba,

Don't stress: how about you do this...

Make an appointment for same day passport on the July 5th for the 19th. Also, I was advised NY offers walk ins as well and sometimes walk ins will be processed before people with their appointments if they got there before someone with an appointment. This is the link I was given:

http://m.yelp.com/biz/new-york-passport-agency-new-york

*Also, depending on the country you are going, if a visa is needed before going to that country, for example: India, then they will allow you to make an appointment 3 weeks before your travel date.

Or just reschedule your oath taking until after you travel and eliminate all headaches.

Just a thought

Who said anything about Miami? The poster speaks of Cadman plaza in Downtown Brooklyn?? I believe that's in NY??

Just using it as an example of how some passport centers will not allow walk in's and that there are time limits for some... The OP was figuring on walking in and they might not be able to... I'd for sure check with the agency they are planning to do this...

My experience isn't for NYC but I hope it helps some. We're a border city here so this situation must be common. Officials from Detroit's Passport Agency told us, at the start of our ceremony, to bring over photos, our certificate, and the application for a passport in our package if we needed an emergency passport made up ASAP. We had a 9:00 AM start time, ceremony concluded just short of noon. They were taking in new immigrants who had proof of immediate travel plans first, and you pay the expedited fee.

The rest of the advice here is solid. Try to book an appointment in the morning, show up with all proof of your travel plans. If that doesn't work, you can always ask to reschedule your oath ceremony. It would not be fun, but international travel is a fair reason.

26 January 2005 - Entered US as visitor from Canada.
16 May 2005 - Assembled health package, W2s.
27 June 2005 - Sent package off to Chicago lockbox.
28 June 2005 - Package received at Chicago lockbox.
11 July 2005 - RFE: cheques inappropriately placed.
18 July 2005 - NOA 1: I-485, I-131, I-765 received!
19 July 2005 - NOA 1: I-130 received!
24 August 2005 - Biometrics appointment (Naperville, IL).
25 August 2005 - AOS touched.
29 August 2005 - AP, EAD, I-485 touched.
15 September 2005 - AP and EAD approved!
03 February 2006 - SSN arrives (150 days later)
27 February 2006 - NOA 2: Interview for 27 April!!
27 April 2006 - AOS Interview, approved after 10 minutes!
19 May 2006 - 2 year conditional green card.
01 May 2008 - 10 year green card arrives.
09 December 2012 - Assembled N-400 package.
15 January 2013 - Sent package off to Phoenix.
28 January 2013 - RFE: signature missing.
06 February 2013 - NOA 1: N-400 received!
27 February 2013 - Biometrics appointment (Detroit, MI).
01 April 2013 - NOA 2: Interview assigned.

15 May 2013 - Naturalization Interview, approved after 15 minutes.

10 June 2013 - Naturalized.

Im in a similar situation, have oath on July 2nd and travelling internationally on the 3rd. Passport agencies will only let you book 14 days in advance, so you will have to call on July 4th or 5th to get an appointment on the 19th.

Depending on your passport agency, they might allow walk-ins.

After you take the Oath, you are a US Citizen, and citizens are required to use a passport to re-enter the US.

hi queuedup...How did you oath ceremony go today? Are you able to get your passport today for your flight tomorrow? Also did you have your oath ceremony in NY? I hope everything went well.

@Azure30....I am planning on going to the federal building on July 5th (without an infopass, as i was unable to secure one) and hope that they let me explain my situation and hopefully have a judge possibly swear me in at the same time (my friends father did this a few years back when he was in a similar predicament).

hope TTY his clears up any confusion...

my oath ceremony is still scheduled for July 19th....

I'm possibly in a similar situation. What was the outcome of your story?

Old post no outcome. During the ROC stage, have no choice but to comply, yes you can travel, but only to home, but you are not coming back. With US citizenship, no one is twisting your arm and you are making a commitment to complete the process. No reason is given for this travel, is it a holiday or an work assignment?

Can always postpone either your interview or oath ceremony, but should be for a darn good reason. Is an inconvenience to the USCIS and no telling what the outcome will be. For my wife, she informed her employer she was applying for US citizenship as her family as well. She was considered a valuable employee and her employer cooperated fully with her. She stated the three unknown dates for biometrics, interview, and oath ceremony and informed her employer just as soon as she found out these days so she could be covered for, well in advance.

They call this planning!

Was the same deal with my stepdaughter going to college at the time, she kept her professors informed, and they all helped her as much as they could so she could get her citizenship. Giving her advanced assignments and even postponing her mid term exams so she could make all of her appointments.

Just seems to me, if you are having problems like this, you are not communicating with your family or your employer that you have made this commitment. And once you make this commitment, you should stick with it. Then you won't have any problems.

Was making my stepdaughters oat ceremony a problem? Sure was due to a major snow storm. but solved that by leaving four hours earlier. We got there in time, was a very long day, but was also the end of this very long journey.

As they say, this is only a once in a lifetime deal.
