there has to be a middle ground. we can have sensible immigration laws that focus on a path to compliant permanent resident living that function within legal citizen boundaries with the option for citizenship on the table.

No idea what that means.

who the hell is talking about dropping millions of people here? you do understand the reprecussions of en masse displaced people - we certainly wouldn't be ridding ourselves of any problem. just creating new problems - on top of keeping the old..

cha-ching

You said you just can't displace millions and drop them in a place they were not born That is exactly with the 10 Million or so illegals that came here.

~11 million people. the answer is not limited to either kick everyone out or let everyone stay. the best solution is somewhere inbetween.

not exactly, there's a difference between a one time drop of people and a steady flow of people over decades.

keep in mind the number of illegals who did not 'sneak' but instead were brought sneaked here by family. illegal immigration and deportation is a very emotional issue for many families. there should be an avenue for people that fall under the grey areas of illegal immigration to adjust status and gain citizenship without marrying a u.s. citizen - which currently, i believe, is the only way most can go about it..

Post fixed.

The gray areas can be neatly interpreted by simply applying the law to them

Um yeah. I think they are classified as illegal because they were born there

i don't get it.

You know what .. Let em stay. I can live with that. But absolute lock it down so no more can come. Make sure no more get benefits, medical care and drop the hammer on those who hire them

My big problem is that we will be doing this again in 15 years. They are not going to stop it. In 15 years we will have this same argument again.

If they don't absolutely stop it then no amenity.

You can stop it without massive border patrols...

i'm not going to go back and forth with you on this because i primarily weigh this issue with humanitarian interests in mind.

you might as well face facts. there is going to be immigration reform. there will be a path to citizenship for qualifying immigrants.

of course we should do more to make sure people don't come illegally. one way to do that is to provide more avenues for legal immigration. another is border control. do both.

Not only that. Even if there isn't immigration reform, those that are here are not going anywhere. We'd merely have and maintain the status quo. There's no benefit to be gained for anyone from the status quo.

i believe there is more to be gained, collectively as a country, by giving as many opportunities for legal residence as possible.

Nor any benefit to the 300 million people here legally. Only the lawbreakers would benefit. May as well free the Marathon bomber and Zimmerman too.

Yeah but freeing the bomber and Zimmerman may only get you two votes in the next election. Making these folks legal gets you millions of votes down the road. Quid pro Quo. We did you a solid a few years ago, now vote for us. It's almost funny how both parties are now tripping over themselves to get these votes. I can't believe I'm saying this, but the only ones who seem to have any backbone in this vote getting, a$$ kissing exercise, are the Republicans in the house.

That's probably true. The only reason why this country isn't as demographically doomed as other industrialized countries is because we have a better - as in larger - flow of immigrants. Right now, we admit about 1 million immigrants a year. That's admitting immigrants representing one third of one percent of the population on an annual basis. That is NOT a large number by any means. Add to that that most of these immigrants are working age adults. They're are a net gain to the economy.

So Texas should start putting folks on death row for parking violations?

I thought they already did as long as they were black or Hispanic. I think everyone should be released from prison. Why deny them freedom simply because they broke a law trying to make better lives for themselves? We need to reward lawbreakers, not punish them.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
