Hello,

I have a lawyer filing my I-130 (should be done next wk now). I leave Canada for about 3 months in October. I'm wondering what the steps are after you file the initial app and what other things will I need to submit once we file. I'm just worried because when I checked the RCMP's website it said it can take upto 18 weeks to get police clearance...cray5ol.gif If someone can answer, that would be so great.

My police certificate only took about 5-10 minutes to clear while I was standing right there in the RCMP station. Had them run both married and maiden name, never had any problems or RFE.

That's great. Do you know at what stage you had to get that done after filing the i-130?

police clearance is at the nvc stage and accompanies the IV application

if it gets to nvc while you are gone, you have a year to submit all documentation

Thanks for this! I'm assuming NVC is the very last stage, few days before the interview. So possibly I would be back in Canada for that.

If your petition was submitted right now, presumably, you would be approved approx 3-5 months from now.

Approximately 4 weeks after that, you need the police cert.

You could... about 2 weeks before you leave, go to your local police station, and get your certificate done.

Ours was ready to pick back up 2 days later.

You'll have to make sure you have ALL of the paperwork scanned and ready to go so you can file the next stage while you're gone if you want to move forward during that time.

You can wait the 3 mos out if you want... but that's your choice.

when uscis approves the petition it goes to the nvc

most times, a beneficiary needs the nvc case number to get the police cert.

Beneficiary does not need any case number to get a police certificate in canada.

They are used for all kinds of things non-immigration related.
