I'll take the bait. Almost nobody here gets a cosponsor because they're too poor to support an immigrant. Usually it's becuase on paper they can't prove it. Or they've just had a tough break recently and have little in the bank.

I have one because I was in school for 4 years, then working in Brazil, and have not yet had a full year of full-time work in the U.S. I don't think a part-time job would help me out in that situation.

Here's some flack: you're a douchebag. :)

I think most of the cases of people needing a co-sponsor aren't because they're lazing about eating bonbons all day, but usually because they've just finished school, are starting a career, and are nervous about having no tax history. Or because they were between jobs last year as they relocated. It seems to be more a problem of proof rather than a problem of being a charity case.

But we could solve lots of problems with cheesy solutions. Visa taking too long? Marry an American. ;) Worried about adjustment to the U.S.? Marry an American.

It is not that complicated. Those requiring a co-sponsor don't (possibly yet) earn enough money, period.

Whatever the reasoning, the above always applies.

What, just get a job? You honestly think that's practical advice to improve the previous year's tax returns? Well, golly gee.

Consider, when I graduated from college, while I landed a sweet consulting job, my income from the previous year didn't magically go up. Nothing I can do about the previous year's tax returns. Getting an additional part-time job on top of my regular job wouldn't meet the tax transcript requirement.

It's only practical advice to the extent that it's possible to take a part-time job and have it help out the petition. For most reasons that people line up co-sponsors, it doesn't seem to apply. That is, it doesn't seem that most people are making $15K in their career, but that they're in transition and are fine *now*, but weren't when they had to file.

We're having a co-sponsor. Not because he can't support me on his own, but because his tax history isn't good. He spent the last 2 years with me in Brazil... so he didn't file taxes then. And he just went back to the US in June 2005.

We do have an employer letter (his brother is his employer and co-sponsor) and bank statement that shows he makes/has more than the required amount of money... but having a co-sponsor makes us feel a lot safer about the whole thing because the co-sponsor has the tax returns. It's better to be safe than sorry.

I meant, the above line in my post applies. No, I don't think a part-time job is a viable solution. Particularly for those in university.

Unfortunately, the Government only cares about "now" in most circumstances. Although some have been able to sponsor with only one year of post graduate income.

Hm, I wonder why if the government only cares about "now," they require information on previous years' taxes. I didn't even have to file last year. But yeah, I'll take your advice and just "wing it" on my own with that I-864.

Now, meaning income already earned, as opposed to "potential" or "future" income based on a degree.

This seems to be a common theme here, many college aged individuals in the VJ game.

I am just grateful that a co-sponsor was not required in my case. What a pain in the #######.

Troll!!!!

Anyway, my husband is just out of college and is now working full time and is above poverty guidelines, but since it's a recent thing we don't have it on his tax return which is then not accepted by USCIS which is why we need a co-sponsor. So shut you trap about calling people lazy!
