So she fell short of the time required. However the people in the gallery freaked out and before they could get everything in order, time expired. So as of now the bill never came up for a vote.

Also, the religious nuts thought this abortion bill was more important than juvenile justice or transportation. Those two issues could not be brought up for a vote since time expired.

I'm curious as to what was so wrong about the bill in the first place. As far as I know, there were three main points.

1. Abortion clinics would have to have a doctor with admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles.

2. Clinics would have to be registered as "ambulatory surgical centers"

3. Bans abortions after 20 weeks.

What was the issue that set off the pro-choice people? None of those three looks like a "war on women" issue.

The thing I don't get is that these are the same folks that refuse to spend any money on these children once they are born. If they want to outlaw abortion, fine. Any mother that is forced to have a child she doesn't want should be able to go to the state and say, "I have this baby I can't afford, now you help me pay for it. I want money for food, shelter , clothes, education etc. until this child turns 18." Welfare basically. Now if they did something like that, they may have an argument, albeit a very weak one. As it stands now, they are just a bunch of old white hypocrites.

On the surface those seem reasonable. In reality it would have closed all but 5 clinics that offer abortions in the state. Probably wouldn't be a big deal in a state the size of Rhode Island. Texas on the other hand, it's a big deal.

It's basically a back door way to make abortion illegal in the state of Texas. Obviously they can't come right out and do that, so they resort to bills like this.

The lady that stood on her feet all day is from my area. I remember hoping she didn't win the election because she was a Democrat. I was wrong about that. I'd vote for her every day and twice on Sunday if I had the chance. Until the republican party goes back to it's roots, (being fiscally conservative, small govt. etc) they can forget about being relevant. At least to me anyway.

That said, the Democrats have a whole other list of policies I cant stand, but that's another discussion.

I understand that it could result in clinics closing, but that's not always a bad thing no matter which side of the issue you are on. If there are clinics that are are unsafe or are not prepared for possible complications; are those really clinics that need to be kept open?

By the way, are you also saying that you don't think the Texas legislature is small gov't and fiscally conservative?

Fixed that for ya.

So you're telling me that the Texas legislature is merely trying to help by making legal abortions safer? I was born on a Friday, but it wasn't last Friday.

I do think the Texas legislature is small govt. and fiscally conservative, which makes me wonder why they are sticking their noses in this? Possibly outside anti abortion religious influences?

I don't know enough about whoever brought up the bill to know if they are just trying to close clinics. But, you're right, there is a very good possibility, maybe probability, that's the goal.

But do people really want clinics that can't meet those standards? Its just a weird situation all around.

I guess these are the same legislators who refuse to let Texans vote on casinos. mad.gif

The whole thing seems fishy to me. Why is this more important than highway funding or Juvenile Justice? I mean if it's supposedly such a minor thing. If it's so minor then why did these mostly old white lazy guys stay up until 3 AM this morning? No, there's more to this than medical safety. I wish that's what it's all about, but it's not.

What safety issues have the facilities that would be forced to close experienced? I could understand these measures if there are actual issues that occured and are documented but this looks more like a solution in search of a problem.

And now they'll probably have another special session so they can work on transportation which they should have been focused on in the first place.

Gov. Rick Perry to push abortion regulations again in special session starting next week

Gov. Rick Perry is calling lawmakers back immediately for another special session to deal with abortion issues, and also to consider transportation funding and new sentencing guidelines for 17-year-olds convicted of capital crimes.

Unlike the last 30-day special session, Perry is not waiting 16 days before adding abortion to the agenda. It will start immediately.

“Through their duly elected representatives, the citizens of our state have made crystal clear their priorities for our great state,” Perry said in his proclamation.

“Texans value life and want to protect women and the unborn. Texans want a transportation system that keeps them moving. Texans want a court system that is fair and just,” he said.

Perry also alluded to the throngs who flooded the Capitol Tuesday night and disrupted the Senate just as it was poised to break the filibuster of Sen. Wendy Davis and push through abortion regulations.

“We will not allow the breakdown of decorum and decency to prevent us from doing what the people of this state hired us to do,” Perry said.

The back door way of closing them is the doctors have admitting privileges... Basically, the govt threatens the hospitals to cut funding to hospitals which grant admitting rights to any of the doctors who work at the clinics AND the boards which control the granting of those admitting privileges are controlled by republicans... Hence, the clinics have NO way to comply with the new regulation since no hospital will grant these admitting privileges... Therefore... 37 of the states 42 abortion clinics are closed... Back door way to eliminate women's choice in health decisions...

That is exactly what it is. For Perry to label this as some kind of women's health issue is laughable.
