How long does it take to get SS Card in mail?

Hi everyone,

I've got my permanent card 2 days ago and went to apply for social security card at the same day I received my green card. My question is how long is it going to take to get my SSC in the mail because I need it to renew my driver license and update my student status. I didn't know that I could apply for SSC when I got EAD. The lady in the SS office said that I will receive the card in 2 weeks. The reason I'm asking because I have an emergency and already bought a ticket to travel out of the US the next 2 weeks. Of course that I will not be worried about losing my SSC when I'm gone because my husband is going to keep it for me. So is it okay if I travel out of the U.S without bring SSC? Has anyone here ever received the SS card less than 2 weeks?

You should NOT freely carry your social security card with you.

This is NOT normal practice for USC.

You do not need it to travel AT ALL.

Keep it in a safe place at home.

Memorize the number.

Only bring it somewhere when required.

Some employers want copies sometimes.

I think when I applied for a replacement one like 10 years ago, it took about a week, but I don't know for sure how long for a new application, sorry.

Thank you very much for replying so fast. Really appreciate your time!

I have one more question left: I just got my GC 2 days ago, and will be out of country for the next 2 weeks? is it okay for me to travel out of the country right after I got GC?...

If you really need the number, you can go back in a couple of days and ask for a print out of your SSN. Then you can start using it. The SSN is to be used for tax purposes only. That means you give it to your employer, banks that pay interest, investments that pay dividens and capital gains and you use it on your income tax. Now most health insurance companies require it for ID and most insurance companies use it for a credit check. Be very careful how you give the number out to. I alsway ask why they need the number and there is about 5 minuites where we discuss that they have no legal right to it.

You DO NOT need the SSC to travel. You need a valid passport and your GC. Make certain that your airline tickets are in the name on the passport if the passport and GC names are different. If they are different, carry a copy of your marriage certificate to help the airlines see that the maiden name and married name are still you.

Have a good trip.

Dave
