Because Dunkin Donuts hasn't gone around buying up local places; around here, at least. Because DD isn't pretentious. Because DD doesn't call its employees "Baristas". Because you can go in and order a cup of coffee and GET a cup of coffee - without the attitude. Because Yuppies don't carry around DD cups as status symbols.

Need more reasons?

Because DD didn't refuse to give water to firefighters in NY on 911 unless they paid for it.

They don't need to buy up a local place to put them out of business. They are also part of large chain that operates more than just Dunkin Donuts. Put a Dunkin Donuts next to a local Donut shop and that donut shop might not do so well. It's still corporate america, you might like their marketing better but its still marketing. I'm not a yuppie and drinking Starbucks doesn't make me one.

So you're saying that you DO carry the cup around as a status symbol? Because in my comment, those two things are linked. I didn't say that people who drink Scarschmucks are yuppies, I said that those who carry the cup around like a status symbol are yuppies......

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

i love my coffee...but i like it weak....cappacino's are my fav..

havent tried any big named places yet

but i did get a cappacino at a mall once asked for weak they looked at me strange..i went to put my sugar in and found they dont even put chocolate sprinkled powder on the top .. asked if i could have some they looked strange again at me and offered me some chocolate chips lol

so when my cadbury drinking chocolate arrives from oz i just might introduce them to the delight that aussies love lol

i so miss my coffee from oz too ...its just different over here for me..i once found a small jar in the cupboard that i had forgotten about that i had brought over with me and i tell you i was in heaven for one cup of aussie style coffee lol

So if I was out shopping and decided to grab a cup of coffee, then my starbucks cup is a status symbol? I don't even see how you can link those 2 things together at all. How would you even know why someone is holding a starbucks cup?

How would you even know why someone is holding a starbucks cup?

This point is key. If I'm holding a Starbucks cup in public (say, while waiting for the next train), it's because I'm not done with it yet and because I don't have time to stay inside Starbucks and finish it (that train is on its way and I gotta be on it). It's not a status symbol and I'm not aware of any Starbucks drinking people (I know many) who think it is.

Now, if one were to see me holding my Starbucks cup while I'm waiting for that train and think that I consider it to be a status symbol, that's his bad, not mine.

This conversation reminds me of an article I once read in the New Yorker many years ago that said when men take their cell phones out of their coat pockets and put them on the table during dinner at a restaurant, that the gesture was one of sexual prowess and supremacy. Sounded like a load of crock to me at the time and come to think of it, it still does. I can't help it if the author felt that way about my cheap POS cell phone being on the table. She can believe that's why I put it there, but she'd be wrong.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

I much rather drink the coffee I make at home. But if I am out I would get a cup (if it's cold) at any coffee place (Starbucks, Caribou, etc)

though Starbucks gives me a headache most times. I do like Panera Bread's hazelnut coffee...Mmmm

While I love Tim Horton's here in Canada, I have made it to a Caribou Coffee, and thought it was wonderful! I prefer going to small local cafes when I can. Both Gene and I are coffee "snobs", so we check out areas we're going to visit for cafe's, diners, bistros etc. where a cup of coffee is their specialty. It's fun to map out and compare. We've found the most out of the way places, with wonderful coffee and pastries this way!

We love the Coffee Garden in Soulard in St. Louis.
