Okay i was at work one time.. and this old filipino lady comes up to talking about.. wheres the CR ...

So i was like we dont got a see CR ... and she said yess you doo....

I said No we dont mam... What is a CR...

She said.. Comfort room... I told her.. Mam we dont have a room like that. But your more than welcome to go to the hotel lobby they have comfortable chairs and couches you can sit at to wait for who ever it is to get done.

She got all mad and rolled away...

Later then I ask some old filipino guy i work with.. told him this lady got all pissed cause i told her she can go to the hotel couches.

Then later i find out.. CR means.. the bathroom .. I never even heard that before.. CR??? Really?? I get it now its sort of like the restroom and the bathroom..

I asked why the heck do they call it a comfort room... he said cause after you pee you feel comfort... Okkayyyyyy1??!??!

When i was in bacolod.. I order mcdonalds.. and i ask the lady do you have big macs still available.. She says "FOR A WHILE SIR" ... Im like what do you mean for a while?/ SO okay so you do have big macs available but only for a while? She says no sir for a while... I was like.. What ?!?? So i said so you got the big macs or not.. she kept saying for a while.. so a hanged up

Later on my wife tells me.. she means hold on a second shes gonna go check... Mannn that is sooo confusing...

they also short cut on excuse me.. and they say EXCUSEEEE....

Also man.. its like UBE and Pandan flavor everywhere... I dont like those... I like Melon flavor and i always get that mixed up with the pandan flavor..

Also the serving size at the resturant is sooo small compared to the usa.. I thought i was getting food cheaper here in the PI but compared to the ammount of food you get it equals out to the same price..

I went to the japanese resteraunt called L kaisen.. at the sm mall.. and i order this bowl with ice tea.. and my wife gets the cup and its like the size of the cap cup you see on a large bottle of listerine or a shot glass.. I was like...

Seriousy sir? I didnt order a kid meal.. matterfact kids meal at mcdonalds come with a bigger drink then this... Then the guy tells me thats what it comes with.. IM just like okay.. well let me order like 3 more of those..

So everytime i go to a resturant i order like 4 meals and im not even that fat im 5'5 and im 135 pounds....

Hey this topic is very funny! I used to this kind of thing though my fiancee is also from Bacolod. Oh what a small world! I haven't been to a restaurant called L'kaise but me and Jen always passed by that restaurant. Funny topic of yours! It made me laugh cause you don't really know what exactly Filipinos are referring to!

Yea but shes not from Bacolod we just stay there at the hotel because her moms house doesnt have A/C and i cannot be there without a/c.

What I like about the philipines.. is like... The movie tickets are like 5 at night time and the imax is 10$ so its like half the price of tickets here in cali..

Another thing is.. Man.. when i walk through the mall i feel like a celebrity or somthing.. even though im not a white guy im a asian guy..

I think its because i dress diffrent from the rest of them.. Cause i got the new nike air forces the ones you cant get int he PI and even the TSA guy at the Airport in manila said nice shoes... and also my Evisu shorts and clothing is fresh clothing you cant get in the PI...

Or maybe cause they just think i look or im fly.. even though i dont think so... But I swear.. I keep my head down when i walk through the mall in the PI now.. cause.. even the girls that are there with there bf take a stare and smile at me..

I mean i used to get that in highschool since i was part of one of the "cool kids" groups... but i mean it went overboard int he PI..

Feel like a celebrity I swear.. So Now i know how... Jay Z feels like

Just to clear up some confusion. CR / Comfort Room = Toilet ; Head ; John not Bathroom biggrin.png altho in the Philippines sometimes Bathrooms and toilet designed as one room when space or money is tight. But in case when Bathroom is separate from a John. Then CR means John.

Also, good thing you haven't been confused about the usage of Napkins. In the Philippines Sanitary pads are also called napkins biggrin.png

And one funny experience too when my husband visitted me before was when he was offered by my family a "Moron". He was like "What? Why did they call me that?" LMAOOOO...Moron is a delicacy in our place, so I explained and he laughed.

Also, people call white men there a Joe biggrin.png some but not all .

Be careful not to over dress yourself or be obvious your a foreigner there. I am from Philippines and I do love my country but despite all the good and charm there is there somehow, you can deny that there's also some amount of risk everyone should pay attention to.

Noo noo.. here in the USa.. I call the restroom same as bathroom and same as toilet..... John or head thats like a military term my dad used to say.. but still people know it...

Yea that naphkin thing was confusing too.. my wifes used to say it.. but . i get it means tampon or pad..

Speaking of food.. One of my supervisors is mexican... and i was talking to this philipino person and i told her i like the puto at inasal... and the supervisor kept laughing and his like.. yea so you like Puto's right? And i was like yea the food.. He said that means g a y in spanish..

OH and this philipino lady at my work said.. did you bring me a pusit ...but the way she said it sounded like the other female gental word... so i told her... Lol Umm no .. but you already have one of those... but im shure pol ( a old filipino guy who always checks out girls at my work) would like some pusit... and she was like.. yea he likes it too.. but i wanted some pusit .. Maybe it's just the places you're eating...in my experience the food portions at restaurants seem a little smaller but not much different, but ALOT cheaper. Agree with the drinks though, tiny with no refills.

Speaking of napkins; if you get one it's about 1/8 the size of a napkin we use in the US...it's like trying to wipe your hands and mouth with a cotton swap.

I'm pretty sure you know that language is not absolute. It is arbitrary so I'm wondering why you are surprised. When you visit England, Australia, Canada, or Ireland, do you also act confused just because words and phrases mean so much different there compared to their usage in the US? Besides, your English is not perfect either. I've seen Filipinos who write better than you do. You couldn't even use "hung" and "hanged" properly. jest.gif

There are some interesting phrases Filipinos use that have thrown me in the past, but I've gotten so used to them, I'll even use them myself with my wife.

Until now, really threw me for a loop, because in American English it sounds like you did something but stopped now. In Filipino English it means that you do something and continue to do so. Theres a ton of words that aren't pronounced the same and can throw you to.

Beach is just so wrong and embarrassing when taxi drivers were all calling out White Beach one day and shocked some a few Kanas that had just arrived in that town!

soup sounds like soap and soap sounds like soup

Lettuce really cracked me up when I finally realized what they were saying. It was pronounced Lee Twos and I just couldn't understand what they were saying. Even asked my wife to translate it into English and she told me that was English.

I love how they say the letter H, which comes out like etch.

On a reverse side I was saying Mayor to my once wife and she kept hearing the word as mirror. Then when she replied to me sounded like Mayor. We went back and forth for while until we figured out what each of us was saying, Turns out a bit of a regional thing here, we don't pronounce mayor correctly, basically dropping the OR sound for R and the A more of an eh sound, which I'd never noticed it before. Oh and we also don't say mirror correctly either.

I've taken to using a bit of Filipino in my everyday language here in the USA now. Bakit is a word that has totally replaced Why in my head when I think, and I literally have to translate to say the word Why. I first noticed this at work, I was debugging a new machine design and frequently talk to myself when doing so. I was stuck on something that made no sense, the program looked correct, but the machine was doing what I wanted. The workers on the machine were heard me say bakit bakit bakit, and thought I was saying fukit fukit fukit. rofl.gif

One of the very first things my wife taught me when we started dating was how to pronounce everything in Filipino. It makes a HUGE difference when learning the language. I have a near perfect General American accent (aka the newscaster or television accent) despite being from the South so my wife never has trouble understanding my English.

I always use the term CR rather than restroom or bathroom. As for Filipino words that have crept into my everyday English I use bakit, pwede, medyo, and na with regularity.

Concerning portion sizes, I personally prefer Filipino serving sizes. My wife loves to complain about how a standard meal here would feed four people back home comfortably. She's taken to either splitting meals with me or ordering from the children's menu when the establishment will permit her the privilege.

What you maybe referring to as Filipino English may have been the Progressive Tense/s of the Verb. Just IMHO
