K1 visa app do you need prev marriage certificate?

Hello,

I'm preparing for packet 3 and the checklist says marriage certificate, is this for the CR-1 applicants? I was previously married and have my divorce certificate, but can't find my marriage certificate. I'm hoping I don't actually need it. Thanks!

As far as I know, please let the experts confirm, but you don't need a marriage certificate for K1. You do need a full and complete copy of your divorce decree, to show that you are free to marry I presume.

He is completely right! k1 visa applicants dont need a marriage certificate just the divorce decree/death certificate or anullment

Usually, nobody that gets divorce, keeps the marriage certificate hahahahaaha! My husband burnt his when he got divorced of his 1st wife hahahaha! noooo, Im kidding !!

I know this is a thread from last year but...looking through lists of things it does look like they want your previous marriage certificate. Has anyone had to provide that? I had so much trouble getting my divorce certificate- from the provincial archives no less- it won't be something that will happen quickly. I did use my married name briefly 30 years ago. Sometimes when I read the instructions for this stuff I feel so absolutely dense! I did read through a bunch of old threads about it and it appears to be ongoing confusion...

I can confirm I did not need my previous marriage certificate, I only needed my divorce decree. I just had my K1 visa interview in Sept 2013.

The business with the marriage certificate is because the same form is used (kind of inexplicably) for the K3 Non-immigrant Spousal Visa. If you were married and trying to get a K3, you'd need to prove you're married, hence the requirement for marriage certificate.

Confusing? Yes. Bizarre that they don't just issue a I-129g for spouses filing for K3s? Yes. Welcome to government bureaucracy!
