Ever wonder why we're not flooded with illegal immigrant from Canada? I mean after all it's the longest un-protected border in the world. Reason why? Canada has their $hit together. Mexico doesn't. Why should we pay for some other country's mismanagement? The Mariel boatlift comes to mind. Who's going to come to the U.S. with these open borders? It's not gonna be the best and brightest our neighbors to the south have to offer, I'll guarantee that. Those folks probably already qualify for some legal status. I will have a house full of Pinoy relatives and the smell of dried fish in the air. Actually I have a Brother in law i wish could come but it's impossible for him to even visit his sister.

However we are going to give people that came here illegally a free pass. BS. we will just be having this same debate in another 15 years.

The only way I would be ok with a path to residency for long term Illegals, is if they absolute shut down illegal immigration from this day forward.

As the OP stated, if magnets are not there for these immigrants, they won't come. Meaning: Jobs. If they are there, they will. This is why Canadians don't come and Mexicans do. Thing is, that very thing is already happening. People are coming in droves for the jobs. And are we affected by it? Not really. We are still a pretty strong nation economically. They get paid and pay into the economy just like everyone else. Maybe not as strong an economy as we once were, but that wasn't a result of illegal immigration, but other causes that are well documented. So my stance is, like the war on drugs, if it is already happening, why are we wasting our time and resources fighting it, when it doesn't really affect the rest of us to begin with? Once those jobs that are open are swallowed up, they will stop coming. Simple as that.

The only thing that it does affect us in a way is the government assistance they get from our tax dollars, such as schooling, without paying into the system via taxation themselves. The simple solution then is to legalize them and tax them of course. And of course reform the welfare system so they don't become lenient on it and become a public cost, but that is a problem that should be dealt with anyways as many Americans exploit that as well.

The way I see it, we can either spend millions fighting something that is going to occur either way or we can allow it and work with it so it works to an advantage for us. Gating ourselves in will only lead to our decay in a world-connected economy.

We allow it now. It's called LEGAL immigration. If people are willing to break laws to cross a border for financial reasons, what other laws are they willing to break?

I want to make more money. I think I'll just walk into the neighborhood bank and stick it up. I mean after all, I'm doing it to make a better life for me and my family. The government should understand that and not prosecute me. They should help me.

Maybe because the borders are porous but not open. The 5 or 6 I mentioned that would be in my house within a month. They can't even get a tourist Visa to come visit right now. Their border is 9,000 miles from ours. How do you propose they get here ?

They seem to have no interest in doing that. They would rather reward illegal behavior.

I'm all for LEGAL immigration reform. Hell if someone wants to sit around and wait a year for their I-130 or whatever to get approved to come here legally for an open job, then I'd be cool with that. However, as I stated before concerning the H1-B program, it would probably be abused by U.S. corporations to exploit workers. Corporations are very good at taking laws, twisting them around to their benefit, and turning them into something that is not even close to their original intent. That's why lawyers make the big bucks.

I don't even think the Chinese would want any part of that place. I was born and raised there. If only my dad would've shagged my mom 5 miles to the East back in '68, I could've been a Canadian. What is to stop the next wave of say 20 million illegals from crossing the borders. NOTHING...The black community welcomes this influx . When 80 percent of inner city black males cannot finish high school.maybe even the tenth grade .......There will be hardly any jobs for this part of America. You let the Hispanic population get a generation established with dual language skills and the Ebonics crowd will not even be treading water.

The work ethics of the Chinese are such that they would transform it. Almost every Chinese I know works two jobs. You need to study the Chinese culture. They make tremendous sacrifice for their children to get ahead. Most asians for that matter. Half of Detroit is torn down anyway...Keep the kenyan from taking one of his vacations and use that money to rebuild Detroit. All the Asians would need is a little seed money. They would do the rest.

So, your preferred solution involves an exponential growth in the associated bureaucracy. Have you seen what they're not doing with what they have?

The level of non-enforcement, because of "insufficient resources", commonly known as political direction, is breathtaking now. Just imagine which of the new laws the federal government can choose not to enforce with twice the manpower - and five times the regulation?

This comprehensive immigration reform bill, which the "Gang of Eight" don't have the integrity to call Amnesty, will be 1986 all over again. The amnesty part will take effect, but the border security and other"protection" written into the bill will fade away to nothing and the next bill will be looking to sort out the next wave of 25 million illegal immigrants.

Everyone thinks Reagan went soft, when in reality he and the American people were sold out by Congress and the Senate. Same old same old.
