Does anyone else here have heart-stopping, you can't move because you are absolutely terrified, kinda nightmares? I seem to go through weeks at a time of them and then I won't have them again for a long time. Recently, I am having them again and feel like I have been driven over by a Mack truck in the morning. Any suggestions as to what I can do to prevent them? I have tried not eating close to going to bed, reading my favorite books (poetry), and meditation but nothing seems to help. After a few nights of these horrible dreams I am almost afraid to go to bed at night. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I used to get night terrors when I was younger. They're usually caused by stress. What's going on in your life right now that's stressful? Deal with that, and your nightmares should subside.

Only thing you can do while you're in it tho, is tell yourself its just a dream and wake yourself up before it gets too horrible. Takes practice, but its do-able.

My life right now isn't anymore stressful than normal except for maybe the fact that my mom is very ill. I do try to wake myself up and tell myself it is only a dream but sometimes I am so terrified I can't even move. They are horrible dreams!

Nightmares are manifestations of our deeply seeded insecurities. Perhaps you've buried some of your fears and you need to face them? I'd recommend keeping a journal by your bedside and write down the dreams. I believe there's a lot we can learn about ourselves from our dreams. :star:

I know how these nightmares originated. One of the worst fears a person can have happened to me. There was someone under my bed who waited until I fell asleep and then tried to attack me. This happened many many years ago but finds it's way back to me through nightmares every now and then. I have spoke to my doctor about it. I do not wish to take sleeping medications as a precaution. I guess all I can do is get through another series of them and hope that they go away soon.
