Can you send scanned copies of birth certificate?

I noticed the guides mention to include a certified copy of birth certificates but I was jus curious about if one can send a scanned copy or if they require the actual direct copy or they send your birth certificates back afterward.

Also I see different posts about the biometric exam....could anyone tell me what that involves? Also do you get it out of the way at anytime or are you notified that an appointment has been made for you to have it done?

I don't think you want to send an original BC. The USCIS doesnt return originals you mail to you. You can take the original to the interview (if you get one). I sent a regular copy of my birth cert and my husband's (the petitioner) and it was fine.

The biometrics appointment is a fingerprinting n photo taking appointment. They use the fingerprint for FBI background check. The photo you take is also used for your EAD and green card, once approved. Once your biometrics appt is scheduled, you will receive a letter with the date, time and address. The appointment is usually fast depending on your location. Mine was less than 10 minutes.

You should only send photocopies when submitting documents to USCIS, unless those documents were specifically created for the purpose of supporting your application (i.e. affidavits from friends and family), in which case those should be originals.

Once you receive your biometrics appointment you can attempt an early walk-in or just go to the appointment they will give you. There are varying opinions on whether a walk-in contributes to your application being processed quicker; I believe that, if it makes a difference at all then it's negligible (perhaps a few days at best). Some Application Support Centres (where biometrics are usually taken) do not accept walk-ins, either.

The "certified" refers to the birth certificate, not the copy.

Thanks for your help also hypnos and SBB. I really appreciate it. Just had to be sure! I know when I've gotten student visas in the past they've been somewhat specific about certain documents.
