SSNumber is enough?

I called USCIS and they couldnt provide me a good answer.

I was granted work authorization at POE.

I applied for my SSC and only got the number, not the actual card yet.

I was told by the USCIS officer that I need the actual card and also a drivers license. The passport is not on the list of documents that I could use as a photo ID.

Can anyone help me with that?

If I have a SSN and a work authorization, can't I give this details to an employer and get paid?

Don't accept SSA advice from USCIS and don't accept USCIS advice from SSA.

You do not need a drivers license.

You have work authorization and a social secutity card.

Yes you can work and get paid -- until your I-94 expires (not a long time)

Yes your passport is valid identification.

Have you looked at the Form I-9 to see what the list of acceptable documents are? Maybe the person who told you was wrong....

Where did you talk to this USCIS officer?

YMMV

What I have is a stamp on the back of my I-94.

I don't know what it is called.

The officer at JFK told me that he was granting me a w. authorization.

When I applied for my SSC I asked the lady and she said that it was indeed my w. authorization.

I dont have anything but that.. a stamp at the back of my I-94 and some numbers written with a pen.

I didnt get a full time job.

I was offer the opportunitty to develop a website. It's a one time thing. I don't think the I-9 has to be filled out. Am I right?

Anyways, the Company wants my details for taxes purposes and an Invoice Letter written by me.

Can I do that or not?

Thank you all so much

You can proceed.

When you file your taxes, you will need to indicate that this was an independent contract and you will need to pay the social security taxes on the income at the self-employed rate (15%) in addition to the income tax.

Ok.

I really want to make sure I can have income through my SSN and that I won't have problems in the future because of that.

rlt,

Point of clarification: All K1s are employment authorized (EA). I don't know if that's by law or by USCIS policy (see a recent thread about a recommendation by the USCIS Ombudsman on K1 employment authorization). The stamp on the back of your I-94 is called an employment authorization document (EAD) - a document evidencing that you are employment authorized.

The way they want to pay you means that there won't be any income tax taken automatically from your pay. The IRS will not know this company paid you unless/until they file a form 1099 for you. You will have to learn how to report this income on your upcoming tax return.

The company is required to know about/take care of your employability. You, for yourself, are legally authorized to work at the moment.

You really should read up on the rules regarding "independant contractors". You will not be an employee of this company, which affects your rights and responsibilities with them. This isn't a problem, as long as you understand about it. Free lancing, or contract work, can be a great way to earn your income, if you can manage your own time and don't mind the lack of 'security' a j-o-b allegedly offers. :)

I will also add that since you are just starting in Nov/Dec you don't have to worry about paying taxes right away, but do look at the forms 1040, Schedule C (business income or profit/loss from business) and schedule SE (Self-employment tax.) They will basically show you when and how much you will ned to pay in taxes. There are also deadlines for paying the quarterly self employment taxes (I believe you have by Jan 28th or Feb 15th for the 4th quarter- not sure.) Good Luck and make sure you save the taxes due now and don't spend all of your paycheck.

rlt,

I'm not quite sure what you mean by this, but having a SSN alone is not 'enough'. You need to be employment authorized as well. At the moment you are, but in the future there may be periods of time when you are not. The first such period will likely be in the near future.

But I got a freelance website to design.

Just want to make sure how it works.

You mentioned that a couple of times, so I have to add--Full time or part time, that does not make a difference. One is either employment authorized or not.

You might mean something else by 'full time', too. :)
