Social Security Card

So I had to bring out my social security card from the "secure" location it's being in since sometime in 2010 and it says on it "FOR WORK ONLY"

I got the card during my F1-OPT period and am now going through the process of ROC.

Is there anything I need to do? Is that designation still appropriate? I believe I will eventually naturalize in a couple of years, so I was wondering if I need to eventually contact SSA to have anything modified or removed. Thanks all

You can get a SSN card without that wording based on your GC.

When you naturalize then you should update them with your USC status.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

I think you have to get it replaced, that's what I did after I received my GC. I got my social security card while I was adjusting status, after I received my Employment Authorization Card and it said something like that: "for work with DHS authorization only". After I received my GC I went to SSA and replaced it.You'll have the same number but without any restriction written on the card.

Good luck!

Have you received your ASC appointment yet?

Depends on how far away the nearest SSA office is and how you feel about waiting just to get some wording removed. Until you become a USC, you abililty as a LPR to collect SSA benefits does not change. Once you become a USC you can receive SSA benefits outside the US and your status changes so it makes sense to make the trip to the SSA to make that change. You never have to show the SSC to an employer, just rattle off the number, as the GC is a List A document used to complete the I-9 and you have to show that anyway. It is up to you whether you want to change it now or wait until after naturalization.
