i know the VJ guides say to apply for an SSN two weeks+ after entering the US. but i spoke to a lawyer who said that the SSN number comes with the EAD after we submit the AOS application. is there any reason to wait? what's the benefit of applying for the SSN early? if we don't apply for the SSN first, do they just send a number in the mail with the EAD?

thanks for the help...

You will need the SSN for a lot of things ie. opening a bank account getting medical insurance although you can do it without a SSN it is much easier to do it with....

If you wait until after you are married or after you have been here for 76 days you will need to wait for your EAD or Greencard to apply for a SSN.... they will not send it to you automaticaly you will need to go to the SSA office and apply.... read the guides here at the top it explains what you need to do....

An SSN does not come with the EAD. If you don't get an SSN within 76 days of entry on a K1, then you have to wait until after you have and EAD or permanent residence to apply for the SSN.

I would question anything that this lawyer tells you regarding immigration and/or the SSA.

They wont just mail you an SSN with the EAD, you will have to go to an SSA office and apply for the card either with your K-1 visa within 76 days of entering the country, or after getting the EAD card.

In my case we plan to get the SS number ASAP, so I can start getting my fiance bank account and other things that require SS number.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

hi

i would suggest you go get your SSN before your I-94 expires..even if you get it in your maiden name at least you have it..

we got married within a week of me arriving in the states i waited the time alotted here on VJ and it was in the save system..

dont forget to take all your id and if you are married at the time of applying take your marriage certificate and make them look at it....

good luck

my husband couldn't get a ssn because someone put in the almighty computer system that he entered on a tourist visa instead of his k-1 visa (which we showed to the ssa in person, but as it wasn't in the computer it didn't matter) anyways, he can't get a bank account or insurance, and we're still waiting for an EAD or AOS approval so we can get his ssn.

i think if you get one before your AOS is approved it might say "not valid for employment" or something like that, but that's what your ead is for. if you get it after your aos is approved it won't say that.

good luck
