How much do I have to make?

I am the petitioner and I was reading through all the documents that have to be submitted. We are just getting started on all this. But when i got to the form about being able to support my fiance, I was a little concerned about how much money I have to make in a year's time to qualify. I lost my job in December and have started my own company since but it always takes time to build up a new company.

So my question is, what is the minimum amount you have to make to qualify and for how long do you have to make that? Does it help that I own my home and am able to make the payments etc. for that? That I have two children in college and am able to support them and that I receive child support, is that taken into consideration? I just can't find any guidelines on this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

I had to submit 3 years of income tax plus a letter from my employer and I did not make enough to qualify last year so I had to get a co-sponsor. (it's me and my daughter in my household already). They do not consider child support payments (at least not in my case). You have to make sure the co-sponsor makes enough as well and the co-sponsor will have to submit last 3 years taxes plus letter from employer as well. I forgot what the minimum was honestly but I know I did not qualify by like $87 (I was $87 off from the minimum!) and I still had to get a co-sponsor. If I were you I would get a co-sponsor ahead of time and just file with a co-sponsor to be safe and not waste time. Good luck!

thanks so much! this was all so very helpful! :)

You aren't going to submit your income information until time for the interview in London so you are looking at next year. Also, what is required in London is different than what was reported about Italy. The link to the I864 affidavit of support you were given is the one for after the marriage when applying for the greencard.

The form for the visa interview in London is the I-134. Because you are self-employed now, you will not have an employer letter or pay stubs or a W2 as proof of income. Your 2013 tax return will need to reflect enough income as the best proof since you are self-employed. Keep in mind, the income is after the deductions you take for any business expenses on Schedule C --profit or loss from business.

You will generally be expected to show an income for a household of 4 on the poverty guidelines listed on the form I-864P if you are looking for a figure to aim for. Child support can count but doesn't that generally end when the kids reach a certain age?
