With our interview scheduled for December 6th, we expect to be in the US around December 11th and would like to get married before the end of the year (impatience yes, but mostly for tax reasons). Getting a social security number takes weeks. Is it possible to get married in New York (or anywhere else in the US) without a Social Security number?

Oklahoma does not require residency or an SSN. You can get the license, marriage, and certified copies all in 1 day.

I live in NY too. I would leave it about two weeks before applying for a social security number, you need to allow time for your paperwork that you hand over at POE to get into the system.

As for the marriaage licence. I would head down to the municipal building (2nd floor) with our fiance as soon as you know the date of marrriage. Take your passports and birth certificates (infact i think they only looked at the passport, but take as much as you can by way of ID). It took us about 30 mins, but don't go on a monday or tuesday as it gets really crowded. The licence will be valid after 24 hours has elapsed so allow yourself more than that before the wedding, and lasts for 60 days.

Another tip is to ask the priest, judge, rabbi if you can take the completed marriage licence after the weddng and go to get the marriage cerificatee your self. If you allow them to do it they mail it in and it can take 3 weeks or more before you see the marriagee cert. If you want to file AOS quickly you need the marriage cert asap. Take the signed marriage licence back to the municipal building with a money order (check http://nycmarriagebureau.com/about/fees.html) within 5 days of the marriage ceremony and it should take about 45 mins to get your certificate(s) - we got 3 copies jjust in case we needed to send any originals for name change stuff.

Good luck.

In NYC:

All applicants must bring valid forms of identification when applying for a marriage license. Expired forms of identification will not be accepted.

Valid forms of identification are as follows:

1. Driver's license (from the United States or one of its territories)

2. Non-driver's identification card (from the United States or one of its territories)

3. Learner's permit from New York State only

4. Active duty United States military identification card

5. Passport

6. United States certificate of naturalization (issued within the past ten years)

7. United States permanent resident card with valid expiration date

8. United States employment authorization card with valid expiration date

The "forms" of ID does not really make it clear how many you need. Also note it does not include "birth certificate" as an option. #######?

They definitely asked us for our SSNs in Brooklyn, NY. Not sure if they are "required"

or what would have happened if we hadn't had them, just saying...

I got married in Brooklyn NY too. No SSN required for me. There was a space for SSN on the form but I think I just wrote in 'none' for mine. I didn't apply for my SSN until after marriage. No problems here. We just both took our passports.
