Few weeks after you sent the I-751, you will receive an extenstion letter (NOA1) that basically states to extense your LPR condition foe another year while the ROC is pending.

You can use the letter with the expired GC to travel abroad. You won't have any problem entering back to the US.

Some have reported that having a bit problem with airlines/immigration officer of other countries. IMO, cleaclean explanation will clear this up if they are confused on the situation :)

No worries, hun. Just take your expired GC and your extension letter (NOA-1) with you, and you should be fine. My husband and I did this when we went to England. Btw, ROC took us a year, so be prepared for a wait.
