Last week my fiance had all of his fingerprints taken. The embassy called to his home on Fri and asked that he come into Georgetown on Mon with his passport to get his K-1 visa. So once again he has a 3 hour trip into the city. Due to various reasons he will not come to the states to just before the 6 months expire on the visa. I have two questions.

1) Is the visa issued on the day that you walk in and pick up the visa or is it already prepared and just placed in the passport? If it issued at time of pick up it would be better for him to delay the pick up by a week or so. Do you think that is a bad thing to do?

2) I know that the visa is good for 6 months. So if he gets it tommorrow Nov 27 and it is stamped Nov 27. Does he need to start his travel to the US by May 27 or within 180 (6 x 30) days of the date of issuance?

The visa has a 6 month validity from the date of issuance, so if it is issued Nov 27, the expiration date will be May 26.

I dont think delaying pick up will affect the issue date.

But you may want to contact the consulate and ask, if they date the visa the day that is it put in the passport, if it could wait a week or so before picking it up to delay issue date. Or if the validity period could be extended a few weeks.

I know that they can extend the validity of other immigration types of visas, but not sure about K visas.
