Why did you pick K1 vs CR1? (for Canadian beneficiaries)

We picked CR-1 over the K1 because we wanted it all done at once and for my husband to be able to work right away and to be able to travel - the travel is really important because our work/studies require research in other countries and him being stuck in the US for months could have really screwed things up!

In hind sight we have considered that the CR1 would have been easier (travel and working right away) but like a few have said, being apart during our first year of marriage would have been hard too.

I knew a couple here that had gone the CR-1 route and they hated being married and apart, and suggested we did the K-1, so I took his advice before I really did more research into the differences between the two visas. Plus her friends and family advised against marrying someone she hadn't known very long, so the K-1 was an excuse to get the ball rolling while adding in more time to get to know each other.

for me a piece of paper (marriage certificate) didn't make it any harder to be apart from my husband..

True - it was miserable torture during K1 too - I was crying on a daily basis by the end of it

I am happy to be here now. He just sent me a message this morning saying he "misses hugs whenever he wants them - stupid work thing." LOL

This is true, but it feels good to be here and know that we are married now and I don't have to be apart from him anymore.

The last 6 months of the K1 process was not fun, not fun at all, and yes there were lots of tears. We had known each other

online for 5 years before we met in person. Now 2 1/2 years after our first meeting in person we are here together! :)

There are a lot of things to consider:

How long you've known each other - K1 gives you more time to do that.

Money - because in the long run - K1 is more expensive.

Plus, if you need to work right away after coming to USA, probably C1 would be the better option I think.

For me it wasn't working right away but rather travelling. My daughter stayed in Canada with her father and I NEED to be able to travel if there is an issue ASAP.

For me, the K1 was the fastest way to be able to be with him. We could send the papers in as soon as we made the decision that I'd be the one who was going to move. If we had decided to get married first, well, we would have had to wait probably until this summer to be able to have the wedding and then file. And even though that's just 6 months, 6 months when you are apart is so long.

I'm already feelign like I'm left behind and missing out on sooo much (his son's birthday, friends gatherings, etc...), it might have been even harder for me if we had been married because I'd feel even more like I should have been there.

Before I found out that AOS from inside the US was possible in my situation, we were leaning towards the K-visa for the minimal separation time. We weren't okay with having an extended period apart after we had already been in a long distance relationship at the start of our relationship. After 18 months, we were ready to blow that popsicle stand and not go back.

His grandma died a year ago and I wasn't able to be there with him for the funeral so I know how much that sucks. I didn't have a valid passport at the time because we were waiting for the marriage certificate to come back before I renewed it. One of the few people he wanted me to meet in his life and timing just robbed us of that opportunity. :(

We chose K-1 as like others have said, we felt it would be harder to be married and being apart. We were also concerned about any possible unforeseen cross-border legal and financial complications and figured it was enough to deal with immigration, let alone dealing with cross-border finances concerns as well. For us it was the right choice.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Chose CR1. Benefit is being able to work upon entry, our situation lacked evidence as we haven't met too long. The cost altho not a big factor helped. Being away from eachother hurts. I will take my first trip to Canada next week. 5+hrs each way in the air is no fun It's been a month since we've last seen eachother in person. When I decided this the difference was much shorter (Cr1/K1) I think it is much longer now :(
