Yen has been here over a year and half. I have tried taking her to different mexican restaurants and all to no avail. I don't understand it. She eats alot of vietnamese food wich has hot peppers, beef and rice in it. It seems like mexican food is alot closer to vietnamese food than pizza or a bowl of cereal...but she likes ceral and pizza and can't stand mexican food.

What is it about mexican food that the vietnamese pallet just can't handle? I am at a loss. I love mexican food and it kind of sucks that I can't enjoy it with my Vo' because she hates it...and apparently so does her family...is this just them or is this a deal with all (or most) vietnamese poeple?

A short timeline:

October 2003, Introduced to YEN by her cousin whom I work with. We like each other etc etc etc..and so on

February 3, 2004, I go to Vietnam to meet her. Things go well so on

February 9, 2004, we get engaged and have the big ceremony and then on

February 14, 2004, I get back on the plane and come home. By about the middle of May I have everything ready to send in to USCIS for the I-29 and on

May 18, 2004 the Nebraska service center recieves the petition. And on

August 28, 2004 I recieve approval notice from NSC. On

October 18, 2004, Yen recieves Packet 3, fills it out, turns it in and on

December 13, 2004 Yen recieves Packet 4, she takes care of it, does the medical etc etc and the interview is scheduled for

January 4, 2005. Yen arrives for her interview and FAILS! So I call and find out what went wrong and they require additional evidence including a 5 minute video of me speaking vietnamese, a tax document that was already in the file, and some letters from me about how and when we met, when and where the engagement was, things we have in common and how our relationship progressed. So on

February 25, 2005 I go back to Vietnam to visit my em oi and on

March 2, 2005 she and I go to the consulate to give them the Video etc. They tell us to expect to wait another 2-6 months. I decide on

March 10, 2005 to give the consulate copies of my airplane tickets, visa and ticket stubs for Yen and I's trip to Phu Quoc. Unexpectedly on

March 23, I get an email from the consulate telling me that our case is APPROVED! So on or about

April 25, 2005 Yen arrives in Kansas City, MO, USA!

Now going through the rest of the process here.

LIFE IS GOOD!

How have you been, my friend? I like Mexican food, too. Getting out of the club at 3-4AM in the morning, nothing beats the buzz better than having a few hot tacos from the taco trucks. However, my wife does not like it at all. I do not know why the majority of Vietnamese do not like Mexican food. In Houston, it is not difficult to spot Vietnamese people in Ameircan, Itlian, Middle Eastern, Indian, Chinese, French restaurants but I have never, for once, seen any Vietnamese in a Mexican restaurant. I guess the reasons is we do not know how to order. However, on the contrary, Mexican bakeries are often frequent by Vietnamese because their bakery products are very similar to ours.

I used to be indecisive. Now I am just not sure ...

Zerovoltz,

Yes, I've had the same situation with Mexican.

and

Now, Thuy doesn't even go to the Burrito places either, ie Chipotle, Moe's, etc

She says, "I'm bored with Mexican food"

It's another bowl of spicy soup for me :)

My mom likes the beef burrito with rice in it. My ex-wife also likes it. They both also like Taco Bell stufffs. So this is news to me.

However, when I worked for Epson in the 80's, none of the Japanese visitors would eat Mexican food. It appeared that my Korean coworkers at Samsung did not like it either. It might be the salsa sauce.

Interesting....

Nicole is not a big fan of Mexican Food either- specifically refried beans. When she first got here I thought our marriage was not going to last because this is a big deal for me. I dragged her into a finer restaurant and we had shrimp fajitas and she had to admit that she liked that. She has been getting into the Super Mex burrito lately and that is bringing our relationship to closer levels than ever before. But with her, it's the opposite as you Zero- She does not like pizza. I've tried every restaurant and every style. It's just not happening. But trust me, there are plenty of restaurants she likes to go to here that I won't order anything at all from either. We go down to the Asian Garden Mall 2 or 3 times a week and I'll just sit and drink coffee and eat a scone.

1. Nothing messes up a vietnamese more than this: mixing their cooked rice with some black/brown beans. They like them white and nothing else.

2. Vietnameses like their rice in a bowl with lot of NUOC MAM, not on/in some tortilla bread.

3. Vietnameses believe the mexican jalapenos aren't hot enough for their tiny red pepper (some of you come to known as "OT HIEM")

4. Vietnamese has a long history of eating too many tacos from Tacos Bell in their early days in America (1975). For example: my uncle hates it the first time he had mexican foods, so the first thing he told Kim when she arrived was "Don't you touch anything tacos/burritos i.e. Mexicans food! He believes it's ruined by mixing rice and beans.

However, I got the fix for Kim's prejudge of the mexican foods: Margaritas. OH YEAH!!!! Lot of salts on the rim, lick it baby :) Can we consider Tequilla as food in liquid form?

All jokes aside, I myself am not big on mexican foods. BUT:

- chicken/steak quesadilla is a dish from heaven.

- tortilla soup with lot of tortilla.

These two would make my day!

It's a personal preference and not a cultural preference imo.

real simple vietnamese doesn't like bean.

What about soy beans?

I need to clarify a little. The bean texture itself already taste strange to many vietnameses so when it in a dense liquid state usually it's a desert.

I'm no expert but soy beans when you turn it into soy sauce there no grainy texture. Soy beans in tofu doesn't have grainy texture either and if it does have the grainy bean texture it's doesn't taste good.
