A few of us are having problems paying the fee via USCIS ELIS website, so they must be having technical issues. Hopefully they will sort the problem out soon.

You can pay the fee anytime within the first year of getting to the USA. It doesn't have to be paid before you leave. Your visa in your passport (for CR1/IR1) will act as a temporary I-551 (green card) upon endorsement at the POE.

It is important to remember that an alien’s lawful permanent resident status is not affected by not receiving a green card. Aliens may be admitted as a lawful permanent resident without paying the Immigrant Fee. Failure to pay the Immigrant Fee will result in delays in issuing a physical I-551 (green card) but does not affect an alien’s lawful permanent resident status. However, it is recommended that aliens follow USCIS suggestions and pay the $165 immigrant fee after receiving their immigrant visa package but before departing their foreign country for the United States to ensure quick issuance of their green cards.

I was able to pay the fee but it's been 3 months and I keep getting a request for payment of immigration fee notice. When I sign in it says it's paid so what gives?

Call the USCIS and find out what's going on. They had some issues with wrong dates on cards and are probably backed up as well.

Hi everyone,

I found out I have to pay this fee 'cause I called the USCIS after 3 weeks of waiting for the green card in the mail, but noone at the consulate told me about it or notified my husband about it! That's crazy...

They ask for a DOS case ID but I don't have it, so I called the USCIS again and they told me it's issued by the consulate on a sheet they should have given to me but the only thing I had was the yellow envelope that I gave to the immigration officer at the POE...

Now I wrote an email to the consulate in Naples hoping they'll answer, did someone had the same problem?? How did you solve it?

- I130 sent to the USCIS in Chicago on January 2013, while my husband was deployed

- Interview at the consulate in Naples, Italy in August 2013

- In the US since November 18th, 2013

- Green card in my mailbox on January 9th, 2014

So that's what I thought, but it doesn't work. I tried to put the number with 3 letters and then the numbers which is also on the stamp on my passport and in every email I received, but the website says it's wrong. And actually on my stamp there's 1 more number at the end (1) that it's not in the number on every email I received!

I called the USCIS but they weren't able to help me, finally I decided to call the USCIS military help line (my husband is a soldier) and they transferred my call, but now I'm waiting for them to call me back.

I'm sooo mad that the guy who interviewed me at the consulate and who should have explained me about the fee didn't tell me anything!!!!!!!

Finally I could do it!

Don't ask me why and how, after I copied and pasted the number from an email from the NVC (I didn't want to print it wrong) and having the website saying the number was wrong, and after having a guy of the USCIS customer service on the phone telling me the IV case number and the DOS case ID are different numbers (one issued by the NVC the other by the consulate according to him....) finally the number was accepted and I could pay this fee...

How can all these people be so incompetent????

The interviewer at the consulate who didn't tell me about this fee, the different people I talked to at the USCIS (I called several times) who havn't been able to help me... Seriously???

I have no idea. I recieved instructions on how to pay the fee when I got my passport back. I also read on here about paying the fee. But all the the consulates and embassies shouod be including the information on the new immigrant fee. But the uscis does sent you a notice if you havent paid it either.
