There have been so many confusing posts on this topic, and just want to get some clear answers.

From what I have read, based on my status, I will need 2 certificates:

1) Passport office

2) District police office in my neighborhood

- I read that these can take awhile, can I get started on the process BEFORE I have an interview date? Do I have to show any specific documents from the embassy to get clearance?

- Do I have to get one first, before the other? I read that I have to get the Passport Office clearance first, once I have the stamp in my passport I have can go to the police office for the second clearance?

- Anyone have any idea how long this process takes? Step 1 I heard 1 day, but the police office can take a week?

- By Passport Office, that means Passport Seva Kendra?

Lots of questions, but the posts have been so confusing with different opinions and answers. Please try to post concise answers!

Thanks this step seems like the most complicated!!

You only need Police Clearance Certificate from your local passport office. You need Police Clearance from police station only if you have criminal records in the past. http://travel.state.gov/visa/fees/fees_5455.html?cid=9215#docs

Police Records

Indian Police Clearance Certificates should be obtained as follows:

  • All Indian IV applicants aged 16 and above, residing in India, should obtain police certificates from the local Passport Office.
  • Indian passport holders applying for visas outside India should obtain a statement from their local embassy or consulate confirming they have no criminal record.
  • Non-Indian IV applicants residing in India should obtain police certificates from the District Police Station serving their area of residence.
  • Indian police certificates are not available for foreign (non-Indian) applicants applying outside India.
Prison Records

Available. A person who has been incarcerated may obtain a prison record from the State Inspector General of Police, or from the Police authorities of Mumbai, Kolkata, or Chennai, or from the Superintendent of the jail in which the sentence was served.

So, just to clarify because I am confused by all the posts, I do not need to go to my local police office? I saw people saying that an officer would come to their home and request written letters from neighbors. Did you have to do that?

No you don't need to go to local police station. All you need to do is go to Passport office and ask for PCC. They already know what to do. I guarantee you, passport office already knows the process. Someone from Passport office will send police officer to your home for verification.

My fiance and I applied for his PCC at the Seva Kendra office in Dehradun about 6 weeks ago. It's very easy to do - just make an appt online and show up with the required documents. The passport office will then contact your local police office to get the PCC - they say this takes about 3 weeks. After the 3 weeks they will contact you to return to the Seva Kendra office with your passport so, that they can put the PCC in. The PCC is valid for 6 months so, as long as you apply within a few months of your estimated interview date then you should be fine. Now, this is the part where we are also confused bc I have read the same posts as you where it seems that we also need a local police clearance certificate. My fiance went to the local office for where he lives to speak with them. They told him that the passport office had already contacted them and that they could now also issue a local one. We are going to get both the local and the one from the regional passport office. I have read too many reviews on the New Delhi embassy where people are asked for additional paperwork or evidence. We would rather be overly prepared than not prepared enough. Good luck!!

As an update for anyone going through this in New Delhi, only have to go to the passport office, takes 1-3 days and not 3 weeks. You can go to the office, fill out the paperwork there, they will ask you to come back for an interview the next day where they will stamp your passport. No need to go to the local police station.

yes appointment letter is needed for PCC. But you go to PSK with only your passport and one passport photocopy and appointment letter and there they take your digital photo and finger prints and after verifying your details in passport they will issue PCC the very same day, same time. At least that is what happened in my case in Delhi PSK. Of course you will have to pay Rs 500 fees.
