Obama still won't close Gitmo!

He is still clear about it. He wants it closed. That has never been different. Congress won't let him do it. That's why it is still open. Not because he somehow realized how important Gitmo is to our national security. It isn't important for that. We can do without it. Congress - specifically the Republicans - loves Gitmo and wants it open. They don't trust our justice system despite there being plenty of evidence that it is very able to deal with terrorism suspects. Where do you get the idea that Obama has somehow changed his mind on Gitmo?

Not exactly A but still a Republicans fault.

A. Bush's fault . can also be "conjure up any conservative in history that even remotely did anything similar to what is going on today. It makes it ok.

If he has no power to close it, then why the hell did he run around lying to people during his campaign saying that he would close it? If it takes congress to close it, why wasn't it closed during the 2 years the Democrats controlled both houses of congress?

Because Bush did it to and all Republicans are evil. You made a negative comment about Obama. You are obviously a racist.

Unlike Republicans, Democrats tend to be a bit less unified when it comes to how they vote on legislation in Congress. Ever since Obama took office, for Republicans all votes on legislation pushed by Obama were NO while votes infringing on Americans freedom were YES - the recent Patriot Act extension, for example. The latter also applies to votes on legislation designed to control women's reproductive organs. Monitoring Americans in general and female reproductive organs in particular enjoys broad Republican support while everything else would run into unified Republican opposition. Democrats were a bit less unified - as has been the case historically - which is why even when Democrats had a majority in both houses of Congress not everything the President wanted done got done. There's so much political capital to be spent and one has to make choices on how to spend it. And then there was the Republican's abuse of the filibuster in the Senate, of course, that got much progress blocked.

Again, the fact that Gitmo is not closed is not because the President refuses to close it, it is because Congress refuses to allow him to do so. Once the President blocks an effort to close it, you may claim that he lied about intending to close the facility. Until then, it's not a lie but an unfulfilled campaign promise. That's a difference. I believe that his predecessor was sincere when he promised to privatize Social Security both in 2000 and 2004. Didn't get done because Congress wouldn't let it happen. Not the Republican controlled Congress that Bush enjoyed for the first 6 years of his Presidency and certainly not the Democratic controlled Congress that he was up against during the last two years. That does not mean that Bush lied about wanting to privatize Social Security. It means that it was one of the campaign promises that he did not manage to fulfill.

Because Bush did it to and all Republicans are evil. You made a negative comment about Obama. You are obviously a racist.

The only thing obvious is that continue to make infantile comments rather than engage in an actual debate.

Ok I got it. It's ok Obama did not close Gitmo because Bush did not privatize SS as he promised. I was sure there would be a Bush did not so something to excuse, but Social Security was a bit of a stretch even for you. Nice.

No, you did not get it. It's painfully obvious that you didn't. Carry on with your infantile letter responses. You aren't capable to engage in a discussion beyond that.

C. I have no idea idea how to respond to the overwhelming facts you presented, so I will just call you a nut job or insult you and move on, and claim I already answered the question. ( this covers the tin foil hat stupidity)

I have no clue what he could do to close it. He is the one who promised to close it, ask him . why did he promise to do something he knew he could not.

I always 'felt' that this was some plank that he felt no one would investigate and call BS on it.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

I agree in part. Obama would like to close it as a personal matter, but I think it is fairly obvious that he is doing his part in keeping it open as a practical matter.

Gitmo sucks, but there are not a lot of practical alternatives. I don't see the issue as a failed promise, but I also don't think Obama truly wants to close Gitmo or he likely would have been more active in doing so by now.

Why would he want to spend political capital on it now? It's not a top priority with most Americans.

Top priority now is turning illegal immigrants into registered voters. Seems like that is becoming the top priority for both parties unfortunately.

Because Bush did it to and all Republicans are evil. You made a negative comment about Obama. You are obviously a racist.

You keep saying this, as if it's an argument people on this board have ever made. It isn't, and yet instead of actually replying to something, you'll use this ridiculous line. I know it's one of your favorites, but you really need to drop it. Nobody here says if you don't like Obama, you're a racist. Nobody.

I didn't say anything about Bush, so I'm not sure why you're bringing him up.

And I've never seen the posters here say that if you don't like Obama or his policies, you're a racist.

Who said that to you?
