He promised to do it within a year...5 years ago. I guess he is going to need someplace for all the IRS and NSA officials to be imprisoned for violating our rights.

He will blame the Repubs but he is Commander in Chief and can simply move the prisoners to another facility, leaving it "open but empty"

He does nothing.

Actually he has been pretty clear. From the outside looking in, he wanted Gitmo closed. With more information, he was convinced that closing it was not the greatest idea. Not loving it but keeping it open was his reluctant choice.

You really should cease projecting your own, out of nowhere misinterpretation of what Obama has said and done onto every issue. You might find Obama is not the heavy handed, inflexible communist dictator your mind has fooled you into seeing.

And another thread evidencing that Gary cannot read. The article is not about "Obama still won't close Gitmo" but about Republicans passing legislation in the House that would make it impossible for Obama to close Gitmo. That's what the article is about which is why it is actually headlined "House votes to block Obama plan to close Guantanamo". The long and short of it is that Republicans love Gitmo. Republicans hate and do not trust our constitutional and judicial system. They believe that it cannot handle terrorists. As always, they are ill informed. Our justice system has proven that it can deal very effectively with terrorist suspects in hundreds of cases. But Republicans do not know this because they are ignorant.

Gitmo is gonna stay open waaaaaaaaaaaay past the time I'm dead. I've no issues with that.

Just cause some president thought it should be a plank for election? Means nothing, cept that fella not have the access (then) to understand why it's there.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

There's no valid reason for Gitmo. The President knows this which is why he continues to look for ways to close it. The only reason that Gitmo is still open is this:

In our system of checks and balances, the president has very limited powers. The ability to actually get things done lies with Congress. If closing Gitmo was as simple as issuing an executive order, it would have been closed by now.

From a purely practical stand point. What do you do with the folks held there if you close it?

I agree holding people indefinitely with no charge and no trial goes against the principles we claim to stand for in this country. If they are guilty, give them a trial. If innocent, let them out.

I think for the majority of the American public it's a case of "out of sight, out of mind". Unless the public put significant pressure on Congress to act, things will remain the same.

Ahhh I see. Although he said it was wrong for GWB to have Gitmo and he would close it,he changed his mind and saw his promise was a dumb idea. All is good. Because surely as a U.S. Senator he no access to any info on Gitmo.

You know, Bush did it to so it's ok, would have been better that that weak weak Obama apologist bumbling sycophantic tirade.

To simplfy.

Bush Gitmo=bad scary Darth Vader Human rights abuse

Obama Gitmo= Tough Moral decision designed to safe Guard the security of all us.

Got to love Liberals

Yawn....

Yes, all Obama has to do is fly to Gitmo and put a master lock on the main gate right?

He may want to close that really bad, but it's not one of those deals where you just pick up a phone and the planes get loaded.

How do some of you think Washington runs or the military for that matter? Do you think he can just wave a magic wand and get what he wants?

If that was true Issa would be convicted of some planted evidence by now, the baggers would be in Gitmo and not complaining about the 501c they should have never filed in the first place.

GOP should change the acronym to GOW...Grand Old Whiners.

I have no clue what he could do to close it. He is the one who promised to close it, ask him . why did he promise to do something he knew he could not.

So he should have know the complexity of his idea before he became president? I'll give you that, maybe he should have known more.

Of course neither of us has been president, so it may indeed be impossible to close a US base...especially on Cuba with all the scary terrorist in the world trying to get us. (And that terror thing works like a charm on American's just look how terrified we are.)

But does every person running for office know what they can and can't do before they get there? It seems unreasonable to expect them to know how difficult a simple tasks is for a sitting president.

Hey GW didn't promise much and I can safely say he delivered on that promise. lol

Just kidding...

Again. I believe that Obama was quite sincere about closing Gitmo prior to his election. I have been clear, I don't think Gitmo was an evil act by George Bush, but suddenly did an about face when Obama kept it going. I think closing it would have been a mistake although I don't think it is the 2nd happiest place behind Disney Land. I thought Obama was wrong when he campaigned promising to close it.

There are no great alternatives to Gitmo. Obama is neither wrong nor reneging on his promise, he has been abundantly clear that he doesn't like Gitmo but has changed his position based on lack of alternatives.

He is still clear about it. He wants it closed. That has never been different. Congress won't let him do it. That's why it is still open. Not because he somehow realized how important Gitmo is to our national security. It isn't important for that. We can do without it. Congress - specifically the Republicans - loves Gitmo and wants it open. They don't trust our justice system despite there being plenty of evidence that it is very able to deal with terrorism suspects. Where do you get the idea that Obama has somehow changed his mind on Gitmo?
