Topic has been moved from P&R to Off Topic as a more appropriate location for this discussion

it's amusing that all of a sudden, you guys feel the need to "crack down" on this.

"See? The OT thread should have been moved! We move OTHER OT threads! Look, we're doing it now!"

Hilarious.

Note - off topic for a site discussion related concern in the thread:

Penny, you may not be aware - or perhaps do not remember - but the moderators do not 'patrol' the forums. If someone reports a thread that is in the wrong place to us, then we investigate and respond. We are not 'cracking down'. I responded to a report about a thread that was in the wrong place. I moved the thread. If no one reports a thread being in the wrong place, then unless we stumble upon it by accident during our own use of VJ as members, we don't know it is there and it doesn't get moved. Organizers do not have access to the report forum, so in their regular day to day use of VJ as they come across threads that are obviously misplaced, they move them to a better location.

Does these lead to an appearance of inconsistency? Absolutely! It is inconsistent because the system works best when we perform as a team - members reporting problems and moderators responding to the reports. If a member doesn't participate in the process by reporting threads that need attention, then the system falls short. We all have lives outside of Visa Journey (at least I am assuming so smile.png ) and none of us have the time to live on VJ 24/7 patrolling and reading every single thread and post trying to identify those that need attention, so the report system is what works best under these circumstances. So, you can complain about inconsistent moderation all you want, but if you are not reporting threads that need attention, then you become part of the reason for that inconsistency as well.

So, now you can return to the regularly scheduled thread.

So someone actually reported these threads as being in the wrong forum?

Yes.

The thing is, I don't have a problem with the off topic posts in P&R. We're a relatively small group on VJ, but we've gotten to know each other a bit, so if something isn't "politics or religion", we don't report it. Or I don't, anyway, unless it's particularly vile or stupid. The majority of us don't care, and will talk about anything in the news, whether it's political or not in nature. And we enjoyed the OT thread.

What bothers me is someone who doesn't frequent the forums reporting them and having them moved so quickly. These threads aren't harming anyone, there's a discussion in all of them, nobody's complaining... and then one report, and it's gone.

There is an active moderator in the P&R forum, who participates in threads whether they're OT or not. So it's inconsistent when one mod not only leaves the post where it is, but participates in it. And then another mod moves it. It has nothing to do with spending 24/7 on VJ. We know for a fact mods see those posts, and even talk in them.

I would be willing to guess that some reports come from people who don't participate in the forum.

Which is the most annoying part. Why does someone who doesn't really participate care where the post is? The people actually in the thread talking about the topic don't care. Shouldn't that matter?

In the recent cases, however, the reports did come from regulars in the forums and not from 'outsiders'. Virtually all of the reports for P&R - especially to move OT topics - come from regular participants and not 'drive-bys'.

we appreciate the service you all provide to us at no cost. Moving Topics related to immigration and keeping those forums well organized makes perfect sense. I.E A Philippine specific question in the I 129 forum.

However doing it in such a free, for all forum is kind of a moot point. No one is depending on any information we dispense. It is all a bunch of blowhards spouting off and cracking jokes. Reporting has become a way for some to manipulate threads when they don't like the outcome, and you guys always jump. Ever considered someone or a few might be using you guys.

I challenge anyone to show any thread that is over 3 pages that has not drifted off topic..As long as someone is not spamming the thread what does it matter.

What if we all reported every thread that goes of topic of every time someone poked fun at some group I happen to be a member of.

Just my opinion, which is worth nothing but I think maybe we would be better served if the Mods told some of the cry babies, "don't step in the arena if you don't want to get shot at", so to speak..

Once again you all do a lot and don't charge us a dime and it is appreciated. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks

I'll give you five bucks, cash money, if you say who it was.

Probably someone mad cause their post got moved. Maybe we just start reporting every post that is off topic or paints any identifiable demographic in a negative light.

That would shut the forum down and only 10% of the posts would make it .
