hello everyone

If all goes well my lady will be joining me in the next 2 to 3 months from hochimin city, we are waiting on packet 4. Starting the prep work for the marriage. my question is I was married before in a baptish ceremony for 14 years and then divorced. My wonderful lady is catholic, and I would like to marry her in her religion. she really don’t care how we are married as long we have a long and wonderful life together, but her parent will only accept catholic marriage. I really like her parents and would try to respect their wishes. I have ask my catholic friends and got many different answers. I don’t know any priest and the one I have a phone number for, never return my call.

My question is can we be marry with my divorce in the catholic religion?

answer I get is

yes, the church does not recognize baptish marriages so I have never been marry.

no that I have to get annulment which will take 2 yrs.

maybe, that I should get marry other way and then get a renewal of vows in the church.

has anyone else on here been thru this process?

PS

Thank you to all who have posted on here over the years. You have supplied us with so many answers and given us hope during your journey. We have had a smooth journey to this point due to the insights you have given us.

I looked into this as my wife too is catholic and her mother would like a wedding in the church. What I found out is you can marry in the church. You may have to submit a request to the local council or whatever they call it for approval but because the church does not recognize the other marriage no annulment is necessary. I was told it was not a difficult approval and where you are it may not even matter. You will need to take the courses together so hope your wife knows English. I am taking mine in Spanish here once my wife arrives. It may be possible to have her take the course there and you take it here but this will be up to the your pastor. I had that arranged at one time. email if you want but I suggest you call your parish wedding coordinator and they can help you the most as it varies from diocese to diocese what they will and will not approve. Hope this helps.

Kimi, if you want, you can call Father Thu at 713-807-9286. He is a high-ranking officer/priest at the Office of the Tribunal of Diocese of Galveston-Houston. He is the right man for you to talk to.

I used to be indecisive. Now I am just not sure ...

Yeah, you have to go see a father or sister at your local church. There are a couple forms you have to fill out in front of him or her, then they sign and notes them and mails them to her father in 'Nam. Ive been through it before.

I went to a Catholic school in Vietnam for 11 years when I was younger but I never became a Catholic, yet I understood it pretty well. Now I am a Christian and clearly understand the key differences between the too. They are basically the same with different formalities that are more important to the Catholics.

My suggestion is not to do one at a Vietnamese Catholic church unless you know a father personally and would work with you. I believe that in general, an American Catholic church would be easier to work with. Vietnamese Catholic churches throughout the U.S. in general are still stuck in the past rules and regulations based on what I learned from all my Catholic friends.
