The scoreboard tells the tale: big night for Democrats, bad night for Republicans at the Congressional Baseball Game(twitpic from Rep. Justin Amash, R-Mich.)

WASHINGTON — By the bottom of the fourth, the stands behind the Republican dugout were thinning out as fans gave up hope. They saved themselves some pain.

The score was 12-0 at the time. It got worse. The Republicans couldn’t score a single run, and the annual Congressional Baseball Game ended 22-0.

One Texan ended the night in high spirits. Rep. Beto O’Rourke of El Paso was the only Texan on the Democrats’ team. In the fifth inning, he hit one up the middle, batting in the 20th run of the evening.

Republicans spent little time at bat, striking out quickly most innings.

“They played terrific,” Rep. Mike Conaway of Midland, who played first base for the Republicans part of the game. “They hit the ball where we weren’t and we hit the ball where they were.”

Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Tyler, was visibly upset by the outcome.

“They said there were five errors,” he said, gazing up at Nationals Park’s big screen where the final score was posted. “I think they were kind.”

For anyone feeling down about the score, there should be comfort in remembering the game is played for charity. The Washington Literacy Center, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington and Washington Nationals Dream Foundation were this year’s beneficiaries. At last count the game raised at least $270,000.

GOP Rep. Steve Stockman of Friendswood tried to make light of the humiliation, tweeting congratulations to O’Rourke and Democrats, and adding: “Nats Park scoreboard says 22-0, but I’m waiting to see what the CBO scores it.”

Dear OP,

The players were politicians but this is still a game, played for charity purposes. This does not belong in P&R. Please ask Kathryn to move it to OT where it belongs.

Since they were playing a game, shouldn't it be moved to games?

The proves difinitively that Democrats spend their time playing around while Republicans are always hard at work and just don't have time to practice games

There, now its political.
