There are a lot more issues with GM than the Union salaries.. do you beleive everything you hear from these right wing nutjob radio hosts? We are dealing with a company that lost half of it's Market Share even though its product is half the price of its competition. Thats just bad vision and leadership. The union never said it wouldnt build a stylish quality product. GM just never got around to designing one. Why? Im not so sure. It takes a long time to turn a bad image around. That ####### they produced in the 70's still burns in my mind every time I carshop. I love the new Camaro, will I buy one? Hmmmmmm Nope.

The muslims are tarnished the same way, nobody is going to forgive them for 911.. It has tarnished them for generations to come.

These days you'll be hard pressed to find someone who would still blame the Germans for the holocaust, and that was clearly a far far worse atrocity than 9/11.

Why is that? Perhaps because Germany shares cultural similarities with the rest of the western world - they're easier to identify with than say, the middle east; a region of the world that is culturally very alien to the average westerner. For that reason the holocaust is broadly regarded as a crime against all humanity, as opposed to a specifically German crime.

The fact that we can't do that with 9/11, says a lot to me about western prejudices against the broader muslim world (there's a heck of a lot of diversity among 1.5 billion people). Yet thanks to oversimplistic and sometimes racist media coverage by the US and European media, we might as well scratch the middle-east off the map, and replace with "Here be dragons".

If as you say the entire muslim world is forever tarnished by this one act, it won't exactly be fair will it?

Indeed. Religion used for political purposes often ceases to stay true to the values of that religion. Those protests last month were clearly orchestrated, political affairs that bore little resemblance to the philosophy of Islam, and didn't even pretend to.

They were engineered as a display of power. People didn't just watch the news and spontaneously decide to riot. They were incited by those with a very narrow political agenda - and they weren't beneath using the religious fervour of others to their advantage. Not to excuse the violence of course - just to illustrate that there was a deliberate strategy going on here that had little to do with the initial 'offence'.

After all, it took Hitler a fair bit of orating to get enough Germans burning books.

Its more politically correct to hate a car mfg than a race of people. I was trying to tie my obvious thread hijack back to the original topic and used a bad analogy to do so. Silly Me :-)

During years of seeing numerous shows about the life of Jesus and Christianity on channels such as the History Channel I often wished that they'd show something comparable about Muhammed and Islam so that I could learn and understand something about that religion.

Last night they did - a two-part, two hours in total, presentation on the History Channel. It was very enlightening. And it appears that many modern Muslims have distorted their prophet's teachings and their religion just as many modern Christians have.

There's also a very good documentary by PBS called Islam: Empire of Faith. You can get it from NetFlix or your local library.

Muslims are also present in the Malaysia and Indonesia. They are not rioting. Middle East has a different culture. Not all muslims have the same culture. It differs from region to region. The fact that the middle east is the problem, shows that their are more political forces at play in the middle east than anything else. Look carefully and compare. Eastern Europe was in the same boat about 20 yrs ago.Southeast Asia was in the same boat 30 yrs ago. Media did not have the same outreach as it does today so people didnt know. People who are not taught a sense or responsibility for their actions is the problem. A social system of one bread earner and 8 dependents has created the problems. Rob the rich to feed the poor mentality has created problems. The rise in violence is simply because thirty yrs ago, the rulers gave the people a vision: better roads communication, housing, water resources, electricity etc. The fact that their is no long term goals for a muslim country. No ruler these days ever promises to build technology. Why should they. They can simply import technology. cell phones cars etc. In the 80s, every country wanted to build their own cars. That is not the case any more. Any company, society which lacks vision will not progress forward. Only a new generation of leaders can instill responsibility amongst people. Not all hope is lost. The street protests are mostly the resistance to the change in order. The people who are on the streets are anti-west because they are resiting the change. But change is coming and coming fast and soon these people will erode away

Eastern Europe in 1986, where I lived at that time and just graduated from High School, was absolutely nothing like the Middle East today. Not only not in the same boat but not even on the same waters.
