Highest-paid public employees, by state

This map was published last month on deadspin.com, but I’m only just now catching up to it. We have to remember that the phrase “public employee” applies to anyone who works on the taxpayer’s dime, including at the college level.

These are the highest-paid people fitting that job description, listed by their job title and the state in which they work. It gives you a good sense of where different states put their priorities. Texas clearly values football more than, say, a really good physics professor or a super-effective school superintendent, if there is one. New Hampshire seems to like hockey a lot. The state of Nevada apparently employs one heckuva medical school plastic surgeon. The other blue states appear to lean heavily toward academic pursuits for their highest-paid public employees.

Oh well. As one of my colleagues here in the office likes to say: It is what it is.
