The reader's comments at the end of the article were interesting. Taxpayers the world over hate being taken for a sucker because of their government's stupid policies.

I really doubt that the UK has to worry about being flooded with poverty stricken US asylees since it is an island and it presumably costs money to get there from the USA. Poor people in the USA already get pretty much the same dole as they could get as a UK asylee.

The USA has a much worst problem being connected on the same land mass to Mexico. The official policy of the Mexican government is to illegally dump its poverty and unemployment on the USA's doorstep to deal with.

America doesn't dump its poor on other countries as a matter of national policy.

You've got one thing right; America doesn't dump its poor on other countries, it just dumps on them. Imagine if all that money that's been spent on your 'War of Terror' was used in more productive ways, ie universal health care.

And you know illegal immigration is not the policy of the Mexican Government. When you consider laws of demand and supply in any labour market, this is clearly a demand-side issue. They do the jobs that lazy Americans won't do. Many illegal Mexican immigrants leave their families, culture, and travel to a foreign - and hostile - land, so that Americans can enjoy the benefits of cheap goods and services.

I'm not implying that the paper is making it up. It isn't. BUT, the Daily Mail is well known for exaggerating stuff for it's own purposes in general.

I used to buy the Daily Mail. I bought it every day for years. Hate it now.

I can confirm that the Daily Mail isn't making it up, nor is it exaggerating this particular situation. Apparently, on average, the Home Office receive half a dozen asylum claims from US citizens each year.

I just thought it was hilarious!

Mind you, the situation we are in here with my son just goes from the sublime to the bloomin' ridiculous. Had a letter today which said that he "posed a security threat" because of his status in the US! He has done nothing wrong at all and after living here for almost 4 years he is considered a "security threat"!

Really, worldwide immigration policies are laughable! If I didn't laugh, I would be in the looney bin by now!
