Husband's passport needs to be renewed

My husband would like to renew his passport before he moves from Canada to the US so he doesn't have to renew by mail once he moves here. How would this work after his visa has been approved and before he crosses at a point of entry into the US? Would anyone just suggest that he renews by mail after he moves to the US?

Thanks!

I think he should do it after he moves. I don't know what the process is for having a recently issued visa put in a new passport in Canada, but I'm sure it'll be a pain in the backside and cost you extra money for the visa re-issuance.

It's probably easier to deal with after the move when he doesn't need the visa anymore and has his green card for travel instead.

I agree with KDH, as it's more expensive to renew in the USA, I suggest going to a Passport office and renewing it. A service Canada office will make you have your travel date up to 6 weeks in advance... Which as you're just now at the NVC stage, is totally doable. They normally need a photocopy of the bio page, but he can send in the photocopy of the old one (current one) and then bring both passports and a new photocopy of the new passport when he gets it. I also suggest doing the simplified renewal.
