I just want to confirm that, once you've paid the $165 fee after your interview, that you will get a I-551 stamp in the passport when you cross into the US and that this will let you travel in and out of the country until the physical greencard arrives.

Look at the bottom of your visa it should say something about the 1-551

The $165 fee is for production of the actual green card, it has nothing to do with what you receive at the POE.

What will happen at the POE (regardless of whether the fee has been paid or not) is this; a CBP officer will place a standard admission stamp on the page next to the visa. The standard admission stamp "endorses" the visa and allows it to act as a temporary green card until you receive the actual one. As the previous poster indicated, look at the bottom of the visa for the notation regarding endorsement and temporary I-551.

You don't need to pay the fee to get the I-551 stamp in the passport. This will be given regardless of the status of your fee payment. The thing that is depending upon the fee payment is the actual green card.

But, in regards to your question, yes, you can travel with the stamp and visa in the passport as those two in conjunction act as a temporary green card for up to a year.

As the POE officer showed me, on the visa they place on your passport it says "upon endorsement serves as temporary I-551 evidencing permanent residence for 1 year". On the stamp they write the class, CR1 on mine for example, and the date it expires.

Thanks guys, I needed that reassurance. That was what I concluded from reading, but I wanted to make sure I was right. Hubby and I need to travel to Mexico for work promptly after POE.
