Brazil vs. Brasil

  1. 1. When you write IN ENGLISH, how do you spell the name of the country?

    • "Brasil," since that's how it is in Portuguese
      13
    • "Brazil," because I don't say "Italia" or "España" when I'm speaking English either

That's a good idea. I think my boyfriend should say "United States" when he's speaking Portuguese. To show me the respect I deserve. :P

I have to quote Stephen Colbert on this one: "Real Americans fail geography" (The Wørd: "Hell No!").

So, I kinda understand them on that one.

Just rolls right off the tongue, doesn't it?

I remember when I lived in Italy, I would tell people I was American, and they always assumed I was South American. I'm sure that was, in part, due to my appearance, but what is the norm in foreign countries? It is appropriate to say you're American meaning that you're from the US, right?

I think so, I mean, plenty of people from the US are referred to as "brutti americani" in Italy.

For some reason in São Paulo people asked me if I was German a lot (mostly cab drivers)! I don't know about what's appropriate but lots of languages call us Americans too. The only other country besides Brazil (and the US) I've lived in was France, and they always called me americaine. But in Brazil I got lectured by some young political types for saying I was American. And most people would just say "gringa."

My new MacBook (this is day two of our torrid love affair) has this Photobooth feature where it takes pictures of you with its little webcam in various styles. That one is "thermal" but there's also "comic book" and "drawing pencil" and some weird funhouse ones. It's pretty fabulous.

(Yep, I'm trying to justify having a MacBook.)

And they were right on lecturing you, you are not the only Americans around. You weren't even the first Europeans to establish settlement in this wonderful land.

And calling yourself American in Brazil is asking for a "Americana é a pqp!"

So, you should show a little more respect...

... and type Brazil with an S
