Brazil vs. Brasil

  1. 1. When you write IN ENGLISH, how do you spell the name of the country?

    • "Brasil," since that's how it is in Portuguese
      13
    • "Brazil," because I don't say "Italia" or "España" when I'm speaking English either

"Brasil" is all over the Latin America forum in English-language threads. And has been since I joined VJ. Can you tell it irritates me?

I've had similar rants about saying "Allah" instead of "God".

I type Brazil. And you know what irritates me? "Columbia" when the person meant Colombia, the country.

I only offer advice - not even legal. Just the plain and simple kind.

It should be "Columbia" because that's how we spell "Columbus".

You don't spell his name "Colombus", do you? If anything, it should be Colónia

after Cristóbal Colón (Spanish for Christopher Columbus).

According to CIA-The World Factbook Colombia is, in English, spelled with an O instead of an U.
