dancin5hr.gif Very nice! I saw a couple reviews of that handgun and was impressed. My first handgun purchase was in December; I went with the Glock 22. I really like the gun's feel, it's simple to field strip and clean, and since it's full-size I think the recoil is manageable. My only problem is that it's impossible to find .40 S&W ammunition!! Well, in the past two weeks or so I've noticed that stores have .40 cal back in stock again, but since this is my first firearm purchase I just can't wait for ammunition to get back to "normal" price so I can stock up.

How much did the 7.62 X 25 MM run per round, when you bought it in bulk? Ammunition cost is something that's making me think of buying a smaller-caliber firearm, so that practicing is cheaper.

As for my next gun believe it or not I think it'll be a little .22 caliber pistol. I really really want to get my wife shooting, and since we had WWIII in the household when I first got the Glock, once I warm her up to the idea of practicing shooting for self-defense I don't want the recoil to scare her away. I actually read an interesting article about .22 handguns that made the following points:

--penetration lenth is about equal for .22 vs. 9 mm or .40

--yes, bullet expansion is much less for .22 HP bullets vs. .40 or 9mm hollow points

--but, think about how accurate you'd be with a .22 vs. a 9mm or .40

--also, think of the fear factor-most dangerous people will stop doing what they're doing out of the fear of having been shot or not wanting to be shot, regardless of the caliber size/bullet expansion

--yes, if the dangerous person is high on drugs/adrenaline/whatever, the reduced bullet expansion of the .22 might mean the danger doesn't stop

Oh one more thing on the Glocks: My friend got the mid-sized .40, the Glock 23, and found out that you can buy conversion barrels for Glocks. So you can shoot 9mm ammunition in a .40 caliber model with the conversion barrell! That, IMHO, is awesome...it's like two guns in one!!

So, enjoy your Tokarev, Slim, and I hope your wife becomes accurate with it, too! The family that target shoots together, stays together good.gif

Glocks are great pistols. I'm not a huge fan but that's just personal preference. (I'm a 1911 guy.) I respect them for what they are... and that's a great pistol! You'll be happy with it and if you're learning pistol on a Glock, you'll be better for it.

The ammo I bought was $.20/rd. (Counting the gun too it was about $.33/rd - still cheaper than my .45 at pre-hysteria prices... and with a new gun!) The 7.62x25 is hardly a "smaller caliber" round. It's the same caliber as my AK-47 (just a shorter length). It's very loud, very powerful (for a pistol, anyway) and basically it's just a scaled down rifle round. Interestingly enough, it has the most penetration of any military surplus handgun because the velocity is very high and that enables it to punch through stuff like kevlar. Beater pistols, cheap ammo, and rugged as a tank. Can't beat that for a sidearm!

I wouldn't recommend it as a first gun or for something to learn on. It's Russian, and that means you have to slap it around a little bit to get it to work well. (Tell that to my wife!) If you know your way around firearms already it's a good thing to have. But, if you're still learning, take whatever money you have and buy more ammo for the gun you already own. That Glock is a great gun to learn on. Work on learning and honing the fundamentals instead of buying another gun.

That being said, a .22 for shooting more and getting others involved isn't a waste of money. I have a Walther P-22 that I like quite a bit for that purpose. My wife loves shooting it and I get to shoot hundreds of rounds for next to nothing in cost. (Well, I used to be able to. Now I feel kind of bad shooting .22 since it's so hard to find.) The Walther is a good one and will better simulate your "combat guns" like the Glocks and 1911s, etc. Browning Buckmarks are great as are the Ruger Mk series.

Yes, they are expensiveI that's for sure. I got some 9mm for 230 a thousand which is about normal for around here. But the stores here don't have any at all. No .223-.5.56 or 9mm. None of the stores have .22 cal at all. I ordered some .223 back in December and am still waiting to see them. I have a Bass Pro Shop about 5 minutes from the house and they have nothing! No pistols to speak of and very little ammo. There is a whole section on the ammo shelves that hs been empty since December.

I would however like to be making the money luckygunner is making right now!smile.png

I like armslist. I've had good luck with our Ohioans for Concealed Carry "for sale" section as well. In Cincinnati we have pistols and rifles starting to come back - and at pre-hysteria prices. Ammo is hit or miss and there's never any .22LR except when someone offers up a brick for $50+ or a few small boxes of CCI mini mags hit the shelves at $8 each. If you need ammo right now, you're in the wrong market. Better to have a buddy who knows someone who knows someone and is a friend of a friend, secret handshake, or do like I do - check the boards a few times a day and scour the earth for good deals!

If you're in Perrysburg, I'd recommend checking out the Sandusky County Sportsman's Club. I go up there for Appleseeds a few times a year and would like to get out to the Black Swamp Carbine shoots they have each month. A good buddy of mine is a board member out there and he's a top-notch instructor. They're having an Appleseed this weekend. You should totally check it out. Tell them slim sent you.

is the deal for ammo still around? I'm considering getting TT if can find ammo supply

I bought this ammo as a "package deal" from a dude on our concealed carry site. I got 1,000rds of x39 in boxes, 700rds x39 in a spam can, and two 1,224rds x25 in spam cans all for $1,000. Dude felt bad about selling it to me "at such high prices" that he threw in a couple really decent little pocket knives as well.

I figured the x39 to be $.30/rd (just under current market value) and the x25 to be $.20/rd (about 1/2 of current market value... but over twice what he paid for them a few years ago) so it was a good investment at this time. I don't invest in paper products. I trade in precious metals!

try gun-deals.com . That's how I found my latest deal, $39.49 for 100 rounds of Winchester .40 S&W 165 grain FMJ, at MidwayUSA. Of course:

1.Midway USA is out of stock now

2. There was a one box/order/customer limit

3. Shipping was $15.59 protest6wz.gif

Of course there was no sales tax which was nice but the S&H more than canceled the no-sales-tax benefit.

My friend is convinced that gunbroker.com is why no one can get ammo: the dealers can get more for their ammo with the bidding warz on this site, than they can selling to customers through their brick-and-mortar storefronts. Sounds kooky maybe but less so that the "gov't is backdooring gun control by limiting ammo supply" argument. Yeah, get your tinfoil hats ready alien.gif

Also be careful with the super-cheap ammo deals you find: often they're for remanufactured ammo. I'm no expert on reman vs. new brass, but if you're shopping around don't compare apples to oranges.

But back to my key question: Am I crazy to want to get my wife into shooting? I feel like I've almost got her, so I'm thinking to buy the cutesy pink ear and eye protection, then the lower-caliber handgun. I mean she shot an AK-47 back in the USSR in "homeland defense" class so ho hard can it be to get her back into shooting sports, right??

Buying ammo almost always has to be done locally (to avoid shipping) and from a private individual (to avoid taxes) in order to be cost-effective. Plus it's hard to find it for sale online. I've had good luck with a few online places, namely AIM Surplus.

I did an Appleseed event this weekend sponsored by Wolf Ammo. They brought us 8,000 rounds of FREE ammo to shoot and Mach 1 brought us VEPRs and Tavors to shoot it out of. Totally awesome event! Anyway, the dude from Wolf said there are over 3.5 Billion (yes, that's BILLION!) rounds of .223 being manufactured every month and it's not being hoarded by the government. It's being jacked up by retailers and paranoid preppers like me are sitting on our stashes. Prices - at least at the manufacturing and distribution levels - are largely unchanged. The market itself is what's driving it up and making it hard to find. Your buddy is right.

I doubt prices will ever come back down to where they were but my theory on all this is the dumbasses who bought sky is falling rifles at post-hysteria prices then bought sky is falling ammo at post-hysteria prices. They're to the point now where their wives are starting to find out about it and they're thinking about paying for other stuff and they're going to sell those rifles soon. They'll also stop buying ammo and the rifles and ammo will both be coming back down in price and availability will be up too. Gun show deals will be plentiful because all those ####### will have to offload their kit for pennies on the dollar because their wives said so. It happened last time. It'll happen again.

Getting your wife into shooting isn't as hard as it seems. Take her to the range, let her shoot what she wants (don't ever force anything on her. Russian women love a day outside and a day at the range can be nice even without shooting.) and only what she wants. If you're really lucky you'll take her friend and her friend's husband with you. Since the guys are shooting together, the ladies will naturally want to shoot too.

I'd avoid all that sissy pink stuff. Russian ladies are hard. If you're going to buy her shooting stuff, get her the cheapest ####### you can find. She'll buy whatever she wants anyway once she figures out she needs it. "It must be fashion-able for use whis my jacket."

I'm a member of the Sandusky County Sportman's Club and its a great place to shoot. My work schedule is a nightmare and it always seems the weekend they have the Black Swamp Carbine shoots Im working. I did get out to the last though the guys from ADCO had an MG34 & MG42 an MP5 and an old Soviet gun they used in the battle of Staligrad. Those MG's were sweet! I got there late (was talking to my girl) so they were done with the shoot and were just playing. But one of hese days I'm going to go shoot in one.

I hate to seem stupid but what's Appleseed, I've never heard of it?

I got most of my ammo before the prices went sky high and got the rifle just in time. Still have some ammo on order and I have a feeling they have it but don't want to sell it at the price I got it for. So I'll wait !:) Sooner or later they will get tired of sitting on it.

I was actually on gunbroker looking for some ammo deals when hysteria started and I saw that bidding war, all other ammo sellers was following gunbroker prices with about one week delay, so yes if not gunbroker crowd ammo could have been at cheaper prices

I think a lot of girls actually enjoy shooting to certain degree, so it all depends on how much interest she already expressed into guns and shooting, mine for example already want me to buy her a gun, but some might have no interest in it at all no matter what you do

Check out Appleseedinfo dot org (I think it violates TOS to link to other sites on here.) or just google search for it.

There's one at SCSC this weekend. You could sign up for it or just stop by for a bit to see what it's all about.
