I had to put my 11 and a half year old golden retriever to sleep yesterday. I'm lost without my best friend.

I've done that this century too. She was an amazing golden retriever, suffering with hip displasia her last year of life. I always carried her up and down the stairs, she learned to whine the right way when she wanted up or down.

She was my son's dog, officially, but it was me that took care of her, almost 9 years. I picked her up as a rescue dog....

It was really rough for about a year after she passed.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Today is my first day in the office without the underling. :( Despite all the neck popping, knuckle cracking, hiccup burping and 80 bajillion sneezes a day, I miss him. On the other hand, I have an office to myself now. On the third hand, we have not yet found his replacement so I must get my own coffee and tea for the foreseeable future.

Just looked at my brokerage statement. The last quarter was a wash. Matter of fact, the last twelve months were a wash. At least the recession is over. I am still waiting for the recovery.

For real.

Deepest sympathies. Nearly 14 months ago, I had to do the same with my cat after 10 years 2 months 3 weeks together. I grieved for a year (the first, 5th, 8th, 9th, & 12th monthly anniversaries were hardest), but then I took out the veterinary reports, reviewed them, and realized the true, objective, humane medical necessity.

Change the words below to "dog" and "puppy," and reflect on them, si and sigh, man. The third stanza might be especially meaningful.

---------------

"I'll lend to you a kitten," God said,

"To love while she lives, and mourn when she's dead.

Maybe for 12 or 13 years, or maybe 2 or 3 --

But will you, till I call her back, take care of her for Me?

"She'll bring her charms to gladden you, and should her stay be brief,

You'll always have her memories as solace for your grief.

I cannot promise she will stay, since all from Earth return,

But there are lessons taught below I want this kitten to learn.

"I've looked the whole world over in search of teachers true,

And from the folk that crowd life's land, I have chosen you.

Now will you give her all your love, not think the labor vain?

Nor hate Me when I come to take My kitten home again?"

And my heart replied at once, "My Lord, Thy will be done.

For all the joys this kitten brings, the risk of grief I'll run.

We'll shelter her with tenderness, we'll love her while we may,

And for the happiness she gives, forever grateful stay.

"But should You call her back to You much sooner than we planned,

We'll brave the bitter grief that comes, and try to understand.

"If by our love we've managed Your wishes to achieve,

In memory of her sweet love, please help us while we grieve.

When our cherished kitten departs this world of strife,

Please send another needing soul for us to love all her life."

Welcome to the newcomers! We're the pricklier sort in this thread (refugees from the Politics and Religion forum) but we don't bite. Much.
