I had to put my 11 and a half year old golden retriever to sleep yesterday. I'm lost without my best friend.

Sorry for your loss. I know it's like losing a family member.

Sorry to hear that. It is hard to lose a pet. It's a decision that no pet lover wants to make, yet we all end up there at some point. Try to take comfort in knowing that you gave him/her a good life and didn't let them suffer.

Penny, my deepest condolences. Losing a beloved pet is more than losing a "pet" -- it's losing a member of your family. We are so lucky to have these creatures allow us to be with them. The love between a human and his or her animal is a special bond that is so sweet and uncomplicated, deep and meaningful. That our time with them is so fleeting is bittersweet. My thoughts are with you right now. heart.gif

Thanks. It really is.

I cried like a baby when I had to put my hound down a couple of years ago. Not ashamed to admit it.

I rescued a lab someone had put out several weeks ago. Got her spayed, and she was adopted out to an orginization all the way up in Maine. I only had her a few weeks but got misty eyed when she got on the transport to go to Maine.

Pets can really get in your heart.

Google Rainbow Bridge.. It's a little sappy but still comforting

Thank you for the kind words everyone.

He'd been by my side since he was eight weeks old. The kindest, most laid back, sweetest dog I'll ever know. People fell in love with him immediately upon meeting him. I know I'll never have another like him. It's tough to imagine my life without him in it at the moment. My house feels so empty.

Any future pet never replaces your old one, but they are unique in their own way and you will love them just as much in a slightly different way.

I look forward to the day when I can consider getting another one. Right now, all I can think about is who I'm missing. Time will make it better, I know. He's not the first dog I've lost. But he was special, a once in a lifetime kind of dog. It hurts.

It sure does. And the house feels mighty empty and quiet after this loss. Time is the only thing that heals. Hang in there.

I had to put my 11 and a half year old golden retriever to sleep yesterday. I'm lost without my best friend.

Deepest sympathies. Nearly 14 months ago, I had to do the same with my cat after 10 years 2 months 3 weeks together. I grieved for a year (the first, 5th, 8th, 9th, & 12th monthly anniversaries were hardest), but then I took out the veterinary reports, reviewed them, and realized the true, objective, humane medical necessity.

Change the words below to "dog" and "puppy," and reflect on them, si and sigh, man. The third stanza might be especially meaningful.

---------------

"I'll lend to you a kitten," God said,

"To love while she lives, and mourn when she's dead.

Maybe for 12 or 13 years, or maybe 2 or 3 --

But will you, till I call her back, take care of her for Me?

"She'll bring her charms to gladden you, and should her stay be brief,

You'll always have her memories as solace for your grief.

I cannot promise she will stay, since all from Earth return,

But there are lessons taught below I want this kitten to learn.

"I've looked the whole world over in search of teachers true,

And from the folk that crowd life's land, I have chosen you.

Now will you give her all your love, not think the labor vain?

Nor hate Me when I come to take My kitten home again?"

And my heart replied at once, "My Lord, Thy will be done.

For all the joys this kitten brings, the risk of grief I'll run.

We'll shelter her with tenderness, we'll love her while we may,

And for the happiness she gives, forever grateful stay.

"But should You call her back to You much sooner than we planned,

We'll brave the bitter grief that comes, and try to understand.

"If by our love we've managed Your wishes to achieve,

In memory of her sweet love, please help us while we grieve.

When our cherished kitten departs this world of strife,

Please send another needing soul for us to love all her life."

Thank you, everyone. I appreciate it.

I'm back at work after a week off with a bad back. Muscle relaxers are wonderful things. Just trying to get through the day without bursting into tears.
