moving to the USA

Just wondering what people did in regards to there credit cards, bank accounts, pensions, and things like that.

More wondering about my pension at work.. what happens with that? Do I have to take the money out before I move?

I closed out my bank account before I moved because I knew I would not be using it anymore. Cashed out the money in US funds. Then cut up my bank card.

I still have my visa card through Canada though and I called them, updated my information and they send me new cards to the US and information etc to the USA now. I don't often use the card but I keep it for emergency purposes along side my American master card credit card.

You need to talk to your company to find out what will happen. My pension with my previous employer cannot be accessed, transfered or closed or moved to the US. I don;t retire until Aug 2035 so it sits there. The company will start paying me in Aug 2035 when I retire. Its not like an RRSP which you could potentially cash out and take with you.

I also have a Locked IN (until age 65) RRSP which means I also cannot get the money out and move it to the US.....I get a statement yearly and I report the balance on a special form to the IRS - super annoying but I can't get the money out and take the tax hit now to move it to the US.

I still have my TDCanadaTrust VISA and bank account and use them occasionally while visiting family.

Credit card: closed after I applied for one in the US.

Bank account: maintained my primary bank account with a shared, USD account and savings. This way I'm maintaining my Canadian credit rating, I can pay incidental costs when traveling in Canada, and I don't incur fees for international or currency exchange.

Investments: transferred to the U.S. on the basis of a fantastic financial advisor I have here. I've retained some in Canada, but the bulk are down here. Easy to claim on my taxes in the U.S. and be done.

I opened a RBC Canada and an RBC USA bank account so they can use my Canadian credit to get a US visa. (Apply for it before you quit your job in Canada... LOL) I plan on closing out both my BMO bank accounts and my BMO credit card once my phone is fully paid off in July.
