That is exaclty my point. There is no telling what they are looking at. Trust me, Annie feels the same way.

It is the same thing for Muslims as well. Not all Muslims are associated with terrorists. Just like all every person from Ireland is not in the IRA. But we need to consider how the FBI looks at this.

We are all going through this process together. I would rather take this time to all undrstand everyone's story and use it as a reference.

btw, we are going to be in Portadown in Armagh county for Christmas.

Does Annie feel that because she doesn't have her card, somebody might be thinking she's a terrorist?

Not exactly, but yes the feelings are the same, I know its kind of vauge. but she does not know what to think. Based on her history, there should be nothing holding it back. Personally, I think when our file arrived someones desk was uneven and used our file as a shim till who knows when.

In the grand scheme of things we have not been waiting that long. We have been skewed but these "quick" approvals.

John, I get that 'look' from people when I tell them my husband's check isn't done. That 'hmmm what's WRONG with his security clearance that it takes so long'.

I'm telling you that your wife's 'history' has nothing to do with the part of the process that is delaying her. The FBI is searching domestic records. Your wife's 'history' is in the UK and they care little about it.

I appreciate your stance on this and I'm not diminishing your frustration, but in all honesty you have not been waiting long at all. When we were interviewed four months after filing and told security clearance wasn't complete, I was not the least bit worried. I am becoming increasingly concerned as time passes though. Most hits end up being cleared in 6 months. You aren't there yet and we are way beyond it. I think the odds of your wife's file still having fluid movement are far greater than my husband's.

I totally agree and edited my post to reflect that

Amen, Rebeccajo, you rock.

In todays ever tense and vigilent climate I do feel, yes, that there is the potential of someone telling me that they have a problem with my lack of ID and thus my 'misc' status. We go down to Dan Diego and pass the border patrol stations and I get anxious because I have no way other than to show them photocopies of everything to tell them I am not a bad person. I can't go into a shop and buy something without John being there because when I pay on my card (and use the pin) they still ask for ID and don't always take well to the photocopy. I don't want to carry round the original passport because it has all the original entry paperwork which, if it gets lost, would devastate me.

At least if I had an ID I have a way of showing people that I am ok, even while awaiting the name check. It's a security blanket, and to not have it means I am forever explaining that, no I am not illegal, (and no I am not a citizen because I married an American - a very curious thing I get a lot), yes I have a right to be here, but no, the delay in my paperwork is not because I am a bad person or a threat, it is delayed because beurocracy is what it is and everything takes time.

Besides, if I had an ID I could start learning to drive, and then be able to feel more human and less like I am compelled to stay inside lest anything happen.

Annie, did you file for EAD? My husband uses his as ID.

We didn't file for EAD because I don't need to work and it wasn't till we were in dialogue with our actual phsycal and lovely person at USCIS/Homeland that we realized that we would need an EAD to get an ID and then a Driving Licence. To say we are gutted is an understatement. If we haven't heard anything by January 1st, we will apply for EAD. We want to get Christmas out the way before we worry about that.

California DMV are unhelpful at best, and strict as hell at worst and will not issue an ID with an i-94 with less than 60 days on it (considering we only get 90 days from start to finish that's a bit of a cheek... but anyway) and no NOA will cut it while waiting for AOS. Its EAD or GC or nothing.

So we wait

Can't you get a drivers license in WV with an EAD?

Yup. Had to wait until he had it.

Do you want to come up here and teach him how to drive? In your car?

Driving the car is easy, it's trying to predict what on earth the other drivers are trying to do that makes everything so complicated

I'm fully aware of how ####### the California DMV is, I lived there for 5 years.

Still, they're not as strict in many ways as the PA DMV, who require you have a I-94 valid for 1 year or more to get a PA license. Great for people coming here on 1 year visas (like a lot of people I work with here), who can't get licenses due to not being able to get to the DMV within 1 day of arriving, and can't own a car either because you're required to have a PA license for them to issue you the title on a car.

Yup. Had to wait until he had it.

Ah... no. ;)
