Craziness at the embassy in Mongolia

I had the craziest day ever yesterday.

My fiance interviewed in late May, and was approved pending medical results. She brought them in, and finally picked up her visa just yesterday. She's good to go!

I have four future step-kids who needed to interview later (one of them was in the hospital at the time of the interview.) We had an interview scheduled for June 26th... BUT... the embassy emailed me yesterday to tell me that it had been changed to the 28th because the Mongolian Presidential Election is on the 26th. They said the visas would be ready by July 2.

That would have been okay, but... I looked at the airfare. I had been planning to spend $3000 for the five tickets -- I was now looking at $6600. Way out of the budget I had set up.

I begged the embassy to change it to an earlier date. They had previously said they were actually overbooked for all of June and were fitting me in on the 26th because of the unique situation we had. Amazingly, they came through and changed the kids' interviews to the 19th, with visas ready if approved on the 21st. I paid $4000 and got the tickets for the 26th.

If the kids' interview goes smoothly, I will finally be able to get married and have a proper family in the U.S. -- something I have been waiting over a year for. The road certainly has been bumpy though.

I have to give a big thanks to the embassy in Ulaanbaatar, though. They were actually willing to hear me out and understand my situation, and somehow fit in the interview so that I wouldn't lose a great deal of money on a higher airfare. That's something that very happily surprised me -- they really did care.

Nice.

Some governmenr employees still manage to retain compassion while doing their jobs. Not many though.
