Hi Guys,

I'm a French citizen in the US now on VWP ( march 26 to June 23) I'm a doctor and I have to do the United States medical license exam. I've done from the first exam but I've to stay longer to do the other one. I couldn't schedule my exam now the only available day is July 22.

My question is, can I go to Canada for a couple of days and come back with a new 90 days? What is the best thing to do in my situation?

The VWP specifically includes time spent in Canada/Mexico as part of your 90 days. It is difficult to reset it by going that route, but not impossible.

You'd best be going somewhere else and coming back, with ample explanation about your situation.

If you only have one more exam on the 22nd, the safest thing to do would be to leave now, go back to France, and come back a couple of days before the exam.

I think Penguin's advice is the best, the more time between visits, with such a quick turn around, is best.

You may not get the full 90 days when you return but with evidence of taking the board exam you should be good

That is not true, you can get less on the VWP. Happened to me once, I was travelling to the US a lot, it was my 5th time in a rolling year, so they puled me into secondary, and ended up giving me 8 days (one day later than my return ticket was for).

same thing happened to me, i was pulled into secondary and given 2 more weeks

Thanks y'all appreciated. It seems that going back to France is the best thing to do, I was trying to save my ticket one more month and get some relax after the exams.

A friend of me said that I can go to Canada and apply for B1/B2 visa from there,has anyone tried that before?

I have seen people paroled in for lesser amounts but never admitted on the VWP.

Very true Boiler. FYI, I also entered for a long weekend a couple of months later and was waived through, in the normal way VWP travellers usually are.

OP: Yes, you can do that. However it is risky because if your B2 gets denied, which is likely (VWP have an uphill battle because the US government wonders why they cannot do whatever they want to do in 90 days), you cannot use the VWP anymore.

You have to update ESTA with your visa denial, which may result in ESTA being not approved.

Applying for a B1/B2 in Canada or any other country does not change your situation. How does applying from Canada different from applying in your home country?

You would have to prove your ties to Canada if you apply for B1/B2 in Canada. You have to apply in the country of your permanent residence.
