Never heard of anyone paying someone to put together the things needed for the interview.... most people just gather it all together themselves..... I put our in plastic wallets in the order it was listed on the interview letter... I made a photocopy of each thing incase the officer wanted it for my file.....

SO do you think we are being scamed?

I think paying someone who is not an actual immigration attorney to prepare your paperwork is a scam. "Some lady" or "some paralegal" is not qualified or authorized to practice law. Just MHO.

If you want to proceed with unqualified assistance, then I suppose she is providing a service and it's your choice to pay her for the service or just do it yourself. Not necessarily a "scam" except in the sense that she isn't qualified to be doing this in the first place!

Yes, no reason you can't prepare it yourself.

Thanks to all for the guidance and support and speedy processing to all!

Well, if you are, knowingly, willing to pay somebody to put the packet together for you, it is not a scam. But is it unnecessary? Yes. Everything you need to bring is listed on the interview notice. To be extra safe, also bring in a copy of everything you already sent them, just in case they misplaced something (if you have copies of the packet you already sent, that is). And, if you need tips on what to bring that would prove your relationship, check the numerous threads on VJ that deal with the matter. Good luck!

By preparing the package yourself, you are familiar with the material in there. It may take a few hours at Kinko's photocopying things, but that is actually valuable when it comes to reviewing what you've brought along. That will probably make you feel more comfortable, too. :)

I would spend the time to do it myself, and if you have worries you've forgotten something, go ahead and post up the contents here for other VJers to respond to. :) Good luck!

I have a friend who's mom works for a christian help organization that charges a small fee for helping fill out the forms. Note that this person is a lawyer's paralegal, and therefore holds NO legal degree. When you use these people, be VERY careful that they put down the correct information. They are people just like me and you, have common knowledge about USCIS processes and procedures, but if they are wrong, they aren't held accountable.

As for a certified translation of your birth certificate, i dont know what language your birth certificate is, but if you want, call up the immigration 800 number and find out who is qualified to translate the birth certificate. It may end up that a local ordained church minister can do it, in which case you dont need the assistance..

If nothing has changed (your income is the same as when you filled out the first I-864), and your interview notice does not instruct you to bring an updated affidavit, you do not need to bring a new affidavit. Do bring current proof of employment (either a current letter from your employer or recent paystubs) and your 2005 tax return if you have filed by the time you attend the interview.

Of course, if you are not sure that you submitted an I-864 in the first place, you should bring another one.
